Abstract
Previous literature on business failure demonstrates the failure process varies from one failing firm to another. In particular, Argenti (1976) and Laitinen (1991) argue all firms do not enter in a failure process for the same reasons.
Nevertheless, despite this theoretical affirmation, few researches propose a taxonomy (or a typology) that differentiates several typical “entry doors” in a failure process. Moreover, none of them really focuses on micro- and small firms while the literature argues their failure is specific and very common (Julien, 2005).
Considering these gaps in the literature and on the basis of an inductive and qualitative analysis, this article proposes an original contribution. Focused on micro- and small distressed firms, it presents a taxonomy that highlights seven specific « entry doors » in a failure process.
