Abstract
Little research activity has been focused on takeovers carried out by small and medium sized businesses. Grounded on the singular characteristics of the small firm, defined by the GREPME (Trois-Rivières, Québec), hypothesis are derived to be tested on a sample of 19 takeovers performed by small and medium sized French firms and a control sample of 75 greater companies. Results only partly confirm the peculiarity of small-firm-led takeovers : the acquisition process is more centralized, less specialized, more intuitive, resorts to singular consulting activities, and is mainly pronged to domestic targets. Results keep up the discussion on the specificity of small and medium sized firms.
