Abstract
Effective enterprises are those who are able to continuously monitor changes in their environment. However, it has been shown that small business owner- managers are generally not aware of the importance of environmental scanning and that the usual prescriptions in this regard have little impact on their behaviour. Following an examination of the environmental scanning concept and its specificity for SMEs, we describe in this study an expert-system software called FENNEC, designed to support this managerial process in terms of guidance and evaluation. Results from the usage of FENNEC by 50 owner- managers of French SMEs and conclusions as to the effectiveness of such a tool are presented.
