Abstract
This paper revisits Gordale Scar, a painting created in 1812–1814 by the English artist James Ward (1759–1869), in the light of the ecocritical concept of the Angloseen recently developed by Charlotte Gould and Sophie Mesplède to better apprehend the environmental implicit of the changing landscapes of the Anglocene. It intends to bring out the contemporary technological, social, and animal histories that make up the unseen of a monumental composition intended to impress through its sublime aesthetics and thus celebrate a wild and immemorial landscape.
Résumé
Cet article se propose de relire le tableau créé en 1812–1814 par l’artiste anglais James Ward (1759–1869), Gordale Scar, à la lumière du concept écocritique de l’Angloseen récemment développé par Charlotte Gould et Sophie Mesplède afin de mieux appréhender l’implicite environnemental des paysages changeants de l’Anglocène. Il s’attache donc à faire émerger l’histoire technologique, sociale et animale contemporaine qui constitue l’impensé d’une composition monumentale destinée à impressionner par son esthétique du Sublime et à célébrer ainsi un paysage sauvage et immémorial.
