Interpassivity and Presence: Some Reflections on the Concept of Autoteatro

Abstract

As an exercise in immersive theatre, autoteatro, as developed by Ant Hampton (in collaboration with Silvia Mercuriali and Tim Etchells), is a type of theatre that relies on the participation of the spectator in dialogue with scripted materials. The concept also serves as a way of reconsidering the excesses of a ubiquitous interactive theatre that aims to blur the distinction between presence and absence, inside and outside, reality and imagination, art and the everyday. This “experience machine” puts all its gears in motion to create an automated and interpassive mechanism that transforms the body of the spectator into a sensorial and haptic space, a space of listening in which a kind of “delegated” pleasure allows for experience to be, in a sense, externalized, given over to an outside agency.

En tant qu’exercice de théâtre immersif, l’autoteatro, tel que développé par Ant Hampton (en collaboration avec Silvia Mercuriali et Tim Etchells), est un type de théâtre qui repose sur la participation du spectateur à un dialogue avec des matériaux scénarisés. Le concept sert également à reconsidérer les excès d’un théâtre interactif omniprésent qui vise à brouiller la distinction entre présence et absence, intérieur et extérieur, réalité et imaginaire, art et quotidien. Cette « machine à expérience » met tous ses rouages en mouvement pour créer un mécanisme automatisé et interpassif qui transforme le corps du spectateur en un espace sensoriel et haptique, un espace d’écoute dans lequel une sorte de plaisir « délégué » permet à l’expérience d’être, en un sens, externalisé, confié à une agence extérieure.
