Résumé
Comment s’élabore le récit d’une pratique technique? En analysant l’émergence précoce d’une historiographie de la photographie, l’auteur propose de voir dans la construction du récit l’une des conditions de sa reconnaissance culturelle. Après l’examen des raisons contingentes expliquant la création immédiate d’une légitimité historique, puis du tournant institutionnel des années 1850, cet article met en lumière le rôle joué par la naissance d’un genre, l’histoire des inventions. Grâce au croisement du génie narratif d’un des principaux vulgarisateurs du XIXe siècle, Louis Figuier, avec le succès d’une entreprise éditoriale ponctuelle, la photographie se voit intégrée au corpus des connaissances utiles et dotée d’une légende qui la rapproche des grandes innovations de la période.
Abstract
How is the narrative of a technical practice elaborated? By analysing the early emergence of a historiography of photography, the author proposes to see in the construction of this narrative a condition for the cultural recognition of photography. After an examination of the contingent reasons that explain the creation of an immediate historical legitimacy, and of the institutional turn of the 1850's, this article sheds light on the role played, within this process of legitimation, by the birth of a new genre: the history of scientific inventions. Benefiting from the narrative genius of one the major scientific popularizers of the 19th century, Louis Figuier, and the success of a punctual editorial enterprise, photography saw itself incorporated within the corpus of useful knowledge and endowed with a legend that likened it to the great innovations of the period.
