Résumé
Des analyses palynologiques ont été réalisées dans des échantillons de sédiments de surface de l'Atlantique Nord et de ses bassins adjacents afin de retracer la distribution des kystes des taxons toxiques du type Alexandrium excavatum . La présence de kystes le long des marges sud-scandinaves et au large des côtes sud-est canadiennes indique une préférence pour les milieux néritiques où sont enregistrées des conditions tempérées fraîches (15-17 °C en août) et des salinités relativement faibles (~32 ‰) dans les eaux de surface. Dans le secteur du golfe du Saint-Laurent, l'abondance des kystes augmente de l'estuaire vers les marges atlantiques (détroit de Cabot). L'analyse de séquences postglaciaires du golfe du Saint-Laurent révèle un maximum d'abondance des kystes du type Alexandrium excavatum autour de 9 000 ans BP, soit au début du présent interglaciaire. Cet acmé est marqué par des concen-trations particulièrement élevées (jusqu'à 104 kystes.cm -3 ) à l'embouchure du golfe du Saint-Laurent (région du détroit de Cabot). La distribution actuelle et postglaciaire des kystes du type Alexandrium excavatum laisse supposer un ensemencement régional du golfe du Saint-Laurent à partir des marges nord-atlantiques adjacentes.
Abstract
Palynological analyses were performed in surface sediment samples from the North Atlantic and adjacent basins in order to document the distribution of organic-walled cysts of the toxic taxon belonging to Alexandrium excavatum . The major occurrence of the cysts along the south Scandinavian and southeastern Canadian margins reveals affinities of this taxon for neritic environments with cool-temperate (15-17° C in August) and relatively low salinity (~32 ‰) conditions in surface waters. In the Gulf of St. Lawrence area, cyst abundances increase from the Estuary to the outlet of the Gulf (Cabot Strait). The analyses of postglacial sedimentary sequences from this area show a maximum abundance of Alexandrium excavatum -type around 9 000 BP, which corresponds to the beginning of the present interglacial. This acme is marked by particularly high concentrations (up to 104 cyst.cm -3 ) at the outlet of the Gulf of St. Lawrence (Cabot Strait area). Both the recent and postglacial distribution of the cysts of A lexandrium excavatum -type along the eastern Canadian margins suggest a regional seeding in the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the adjacent North Atlantic neritic zones.
Zusammenfassung
Man hat in Oberflächen-Sedimentproben des Nordatlantik und seiner angrenzenden Becken Pollen-Analysen durchgeführt, um die Verteilung der Zysten der giftigen Pflanzen des Typus Alexandrium excavatum nachzuzeichnen. Das Vorkommen von Zysten ent- lang der südskandinavischen Küsten und gegenüber von den südöstlichen kanadischen Küsten weist auf eine Vorliebe für Meeresmilieus mit mäbigen frischen Temperaturen (15-17° C im August) und relativ schwachem Salzgehalt (~32 ‰) in den Oberflächenwassern. Im Bereich des Sankt- Lorenz-Golfs nimmt die Reich-haltigkeit der Zysten von der Flussmündung zu den Atlantikrändern hin zu (Cabot Meeresenge). Die Analyse der postglazialen Sequenzen des Sankt-Lorenz-Golfs zeigt ein Maximum an Reichhaltigkeit der Zysten des Typus Alexandrium excavatum um 9000 Jahre v.u.Z., d.h. zu Beginn des gegenwärtigen Interglazials. Dieser Höhepunkt zeichnet sich durch besonders hohe Konzentrationen aus (bis zu 104 Zysten. cm -3 ) an der Mündung des Sankt-Lorenz-Golfs (Region der Meeresenge von Cabot). Die gegenwärtige und post- glaziale Verteilung der Zysten vom Typus Alexandrium excavatum lässt auf ein regionales Aussäen des Sankt-Lorenz-Golfs ausgehend von den angrenzenden nordatlantischen Küsten schlieben.
