PMIP (Paleoclimate Model lntercomparison Project) is designed to compare and improve the ability of General Circulation Models (GCMs) to simulate a wide range of climatic conditions including known features of past climatic states that are significantly different from present conditions. One of the first simulations of past climate conducted under this project targets the 6000 yr BP period for the following reasons: 1) deglaciation was complete and the last remnants of the Laurentide Ice Sheet had essentially disappeared by this time, 2) sea surface temperatures approached modern values, 3) the orbital insolation regime was the only major boundary condition significantly different from present, and 4) a number of study sites can already be used to provide preliminary paleoenvironmental reconstructions for this period. Contributions from the Canadian scientific community towards this experiment are presented, following a brief overview of Canadian modern environmental conditions which places the regional contributions into a broader perspective.

Le projet Paleoclimate Model lntercomparison (PMIP) a été conçu pour comparer les différents modèles de circulation générale et améliorer leur potentiel à simuler une grande gamme de conditions climatiques, y compris certaines caractéristiques connues de paléoclimats qui sont très différentes des conditions d'aujourd'hui. Une première expérience est prévue pour la période de 6000 ans BP pour les raisons suivantes : 1) la déglaciation est alors terminée et les derniers vestiges de l'Inlandsis laurentidien sont en grande partie disparus; 2) les températures marines de surface sont près des valeurs actuelles; 3) le régime d'insolation orbitale représente le seul paramètre substantiellement différent d'aujourd'hui et; 4) un bon nombre de sites peuvent d'ores et déjà servir à effectuer des reconstitutions préliminaires de cette époque. Les premières contributions de la communauté scientifique canadienne à cette expérience sont ici présentées, en compagnie d'un bref aperçu des conditions environnementales actuelles afin de replacer les contributions régionales dans une plus large perspective.

Eine der ersten in diesem Projekt durchgefùhrten Simulationen des vergangenen Klimas zielt auf die Période von 6000 Jahren v.u.Z. und zwar aus folgenden Grùnden: 1) die Enteinsung war beendet und die letzten Ùberreste der laurentidischen Eisdecke waren zu diesem Zeitpunkt weitgehend verschwunden, 2) die Meeresoberflàchentemperaturen waren nah bei den modernen Werten, 3) das Orbitalsonneneinstrahlungssystem war der einzige Parameter der sich von heute grundlegend unterschied und 4) eine Reihe von erforschten Plàtzen kann schon gleich fur vorlàufige Rekonstruktionen der Palàoumwelt dieser Zeit genutzt werden. Es werden Beitrâge der kanadischen Wissenschaft zu diesem Experiment vorgestellt, zusammen mit einer kurzen Ùbersicht ùber moderne kanadische Umweltbedingungen, welche die regionalen Beitrâge in eine weitere Perspective rùckt.

The middle Holocene was a time of definite environmental transition in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. Based on several proxy indicators (pollen, diatoms, foraminifera, molluscs and nearshore sedimentation rates), it appears that a thermal maximum occurred around middle Holocene (6-4 ka), several thousand years after the insolation maximum — a lag caused by the thermal inertia of the earlier massive ice sheet. Terrestrial records indicate that a warming began around 6 ka, both in the subarctic (Labrador - Ungava) and on Baffin Island. Marine records, on the other hand, suggested major water structure changes around 6 ka both in the Northeastern Canadian Arctic and also along the East Greenland coast with evidence of a marine surface water temperature maximum at 8 ka. We hypothesize that the marine circulation changes, both along the Baffin Island and along the East Greenland coasts, were primarily driven by glacio-isostatic uplift of the Arctic Channels. With the cessation of water flow of Atlantic (warmer) origin, and decrease in water volume from the deeper parts of the Arctic Ocean through the Arctic Channels, the export through the Fram and Denmark straits increased and the water column changed. Changes in the concentration and duration of sea ice along the eastern Canadian coast would have had important repercussions on the biota of the coastal marine and terrestrial ecosystems.

L'Holocène moyen a été une période de transition bien déterminée dans l'est de l'Arctique canadien. Selon de nombreux indicateurs (pollen, diatomées, foraminifères, mollusques et taux de sédimentation côtiers), il semble qu'un maximum thermique ait été atteint vers le milieu de l'Holocène (6-4 ka), plusieurs milliers d'années après le maximum d'insolation — un retard dû à l'inertie thermique causée par la présence de l'immense inlandsis. Les données terrestres démontrent qu'un réchauffement s'est amorcé vers 6 ka, à la fois dans le subarctique (Labrador, Ungava) et dans l'île de Baffin. Les données marines, d'autre part, indiquent qu'il y a eu des changements de structure de l'eau vers 6 ka à la fois dans le nord-est de l'Arctique canadien et le long de la côte du Groenland avec des indices de températures maximales marines de surface à 8 ka. Nous posons l'hypothèse selon laquelle les changements de circulation marine, à la fois le long de l'île de Baffin et le long de la côte est du Groenland ont été provoqués par le relèvement isostatique des chenaux arctiques. Gestùtzt auf zahlreiche Indikatoren (Pollen, Kieselalgen, Foraminiferen, Mollusken und die Sedimentationsrate am Ufer) scheint es, dap ein thermales Maximum um die Mitte des Holozàns erreicht wurde (6-4 ka), mehrere tausend Jahre nach dem Sonneneinstrahlungsmaximum - eine Verzôgerung, welche durch die thermale Trâgheit der frùheren massiven Eisdecke bewirkt wurde. Belege zu Land zeigen, daB eine Erwârmung um 6 ka begann, sowohl in der Subarktis (Labrador-Ungava) wie auch auf der Baffin-lnsel. Meeresbelege andererseits weisen auf bedeutende Wasserstruktur-Ànderungen um 6 ka, sowohl in der nordôstlichen kanadischen Arktis wie auch entlang der Kùste von Ost-Grônland, mit Anhaltspunkten fur maximale Wassertemperaturen an der Meeresober-flâche um 8 ka. Wir stellen die Hypothèse auf, daB die Wechsel der marinen Zirkulation, sowohl entlang der Baffin-lnsel wie auch der Kùsten von Ost-Grônland, in erster Linie durch die glazial-isostatische Anhebung der arktischen Kanâle hervorgerufen wurden. Mit der Beendigung des (wàrmeren) Wasserflusses vom Atlantik und der Abnahme des Wasservolumes von den tieferen Teilen des arktischen Ozeans durch die arktischen Kanâle nahm die Ausfuhr durch die Meeregen von Fram und Danemark zu, und die Wassersàule ânderte sich. Die Wechsel in der Konzentration und Dauer des Meereises entlang der ostkanadischen Kùste sollen bedeutende Auswirkungen auf Ôkosysteme an der Meereskùste und zu Land gehabt haben.

The most recent paleoenvironmental change to affect the Yukon centres around 6.0 ka. In the forested southern Yukon, black spruce (Picea mariana) and green alder (Alnus crispa) expanded their populations at most sites between 6.5 and 6.0 ka. Even in the semi-arid region of SW Yukon these species increased their populations, although slightly later at 5.5 ka. These vegetation changes in the south imply cooler and wetter growing seasons, i.e. more mesic conditions. In the region of the upper Blackstone River of central Yukon, the modern vegetation consists of shrub tundra with scattered groves of white spruce (Picea glauca) and even fewer black spruce. Open forests of predominantly white spruce occupied the region as early as 9.5 ka, but between 6.5 and 6.0 ka white spruce declined as black spruce became the dominant tree, coincidentally with an increase in green alder. By 5.0 ka the vegetation had acquired its modern composition. As in the south, these changes imply cooling. Less evidence is available on the expansion of alder and black spruce in the northern Yukon. Both species increased in forested areas (forest-tundra) at 6.0 ka. These changes again imply cooling. Because both black spruce and green alder were present in Yukon well before 6 ka, these vegetation changes cannot be ascribed to migration lags.

Puisque l'épinette noire et l'aulne crispé étaient présents dans le Yukon bien avant 6 ka, on ne peut attribuer ces changements enregistrées par la végétation à des décalages migratoires.

Im bewaldeten sùdlichen Yukon haben Schwarzfichte (Picea mariana) und grùne Erie (Alnus crispa) ihre Population an den meisten Plàtzen zwischen 6.5 und 6.0 ka erhôht. Selbst in der halbtrockenen Region von Sùdwest-Yukon haben dièse Arten ihre Populationen erhôht, wenn auch etwas spâter, um 5.5 ka. Dièse Vegetations-Wechsel im Sùden weisen auf kùhlere und feuchtere Wachstumszeiten, d.h. mehr mittlere Bedingungen. Um 5.0 ka hatte die Vegetation ihre moderne Zusammensetzung erreicht. Wie im Sùden beinhalten dièse Verânderungen eine Abkùhlung. Ùber die Ausdehnung von Erie und Schwarzfichte im nôrdlichen Yukon gibt es weniger Belege. Beide Arten nahmen in bewaldeten Gebieten (Wald-Tundra) um 6.0 ka zu. Auch hier bedeuten die Wechsel eine Abkùhlung. Da beide, Schwarzfichte und grùne Erie, lange vor 6 ka im Yukon vorhanden waren, kann man dièse Vegetationswechsel nicht Verzôgerungen bei der Wanderung zuschreiben.

Pollen records are used to reconstruct vegetation in the continental Northwest Territories at 6 ka (6000 14C yr BP). Picea glauca, P mariana, Larix laricina, Populus tremuloides, P. balsamifera, Alnus crispa and A. incana were present throughout their modern ranges in the Boreal and Subarctic Forest Zones by 6000 BP. Pinus banksiana, however, had not yet reached its present northern limits. Population densities of the dominant trees, Picea glauca and Picea mariana, were close to, or as high as, present. In the Mackenzie Delta region the range limit of Picea glauca was approximately 25 km north of its modern location just prior to 6000 BP. In contrast, the northern limits of the forest in central Canada were similar to present. The tundra vegetation close to the edge of the forest was similar to modern Low Arctic Tundra. Development of extensive Sphagnum peatlands had begun in the forested areas and the adjacent Low Arctic Tundra. Palaeoecological information regarding vegetation at 6000 BP remains lacking for the northeastern half of the study area. Therefore, the nature of the vegetation in much of the area now occupied by Low Arctic and Middle Arctic Tundra remains unknown. Important vegetation changes that occurred following 6 ka include : (1) the advance of Pinus banksiana to its present northern range limits, (2) the retreat of the northern range limits of Picea glauca in the Mackenzie Delta region between 6000 and 3500 BP and (3) the rapid and marked increase in the population density of Picea mariana in the treeline zone of the central Northwest Territories at 5000 BP followed by a decline at 4000 BP.

La reconstitution de la végétation de la partie continentale des Territoires du Nord-Ouest à 6 ka a été faite à partir des données polliniques. Picea glauca, P. mariana, Larix laricina, Populus tremuloides, P. balsamifera, Alnus crispa et A. incana avaient déjà atteint leur répartition moderne dans les zones des forêts boréales et subarctiques à 6 ka. Pinus banksiana, toutefois, n'avait pas encore atteint sa limite nordique. Les densités de population des arbres dominants, Picea glauca et P. mariana, étaient aussi fortes ou presque que maintenant. Dans la région du delta du Mackenzie, Ia limite de Picea glauca était à environ 25 km au nord de sa limite actuelle juste avant 6 ka. Picea glauca, P. mariana, Larix laricina, Populus tremoluides, P. balsamifera, Alnus crispa und A. incana hatten um 6000 v.u.Z. schon ihre moderne Verteilung in den nôrdlichen und subarktischen Waldgùrtelzonen erreicht. Jedoch hatte Pinus banksiana noch nicht seine gegenwârtigen nôrdlichen Grenzen erreicht. Die Populations-Dichte der vorherrschenden Baume, Picea glauca und Picea mariana war fast so hoch oder so hoch wie gegenwârtig. In der Gegend des Mackenzie-Deltas war die Grenze von Picea glauca kurz vor 6 ka etwa 25 km nôrdlich von ihrer modernen Position. The extent and distribution of permafrost in peatlands 6000 years ago was investigated in the present discontinuous and continuous permafrost zones of west-central Canada. Permafrost peatlands were cored at 161 locations and the floristic composition of the peat was determined from macrofossil analysis. The reconstructed paleoenvironments were used to indicate the presence or absence of permafrost at the time of peat formation. Chronological control was provided by radiocarbon dating of substantial changes in the peat sequences and by dates of basal peat deposits. Peatland formation began after glacial ice disappeared from the land surface of west-central Canada. Macrofossils indicate that most peatlands were fens without permafrost at 6 ka, except in the far north. Permafrost was already present in many areas of the Arctic, and peat accumulation occurred under permafrost conditions. In the southern area, permafrost development in peatlands began about 4 ka as the middle Holocene warm period came to a close. Permafrost development in the fens was associated with the development of a Sphagnum-dominated surface on the fens, caused by the onset of a cooler and moister climate. The insulation provided by the surface peat layer and by the associated tree cover initiated permafrost development in small lenses that coalesced into large permafrost bodies according to the prevailing climatic conditions. At the target date, 6 ka, permafrost was present in some peatlands, but the distribution zones shifted 300 to 500 km to the north, relative to the present zonation. It is estimated that this corresponds to a mean annual temperature that was about 5°C warmer than at present.

Des carottes ont été prélevées dans 161 sites de tourbières pergélisolées et la composition floristique de la tourbe a été déterminée à partir de l'analyse macrofossile. Les paléoenvironnements ainsi reconstitués ont servi à révéler la présence ou l'absence de pergélisol au moment de la formation de la tourbe. La chronologie a été établie par radiodatation des changements majeurs survenus dans les séquences de tourbe et par datation des dépôts de la tourbe basale. La formation des tourbières a commencé après la disparition des glaciers de la région. Les macrofossiles démontrent que la plupart des tourbières étaient de nature minérotrophe et non pergélisolées à 6 ka, sauf dans le Grand Nord. Le pergélisol était déjà présent dans beaucoup de secteurs de l'Arctique et l'accumulation de la tourbe s'est faite concurremment avec la formation du pergélisol. Dans la partie méridionale, le développement du pergélisol dans les tourbières a commencé vers 4 ka, à la fin de la période chaude de l'Holocène moyen. Le développement du pergélisol dans les tourbières minérotrophes était associé à la prédominance de Sphagnum en surface, suscitée par l'avènement d'un climat plus froid et plus humide. L'isolation procurée par la couche de tourbe en surface et par la couverture d'arbres qui lui était associée a entraîné le développement de petites lentilles de pergélisol qui ont évolué par coalescence en grands ensembles en accord avec les conditions climatiques qui prévalaient. À 6 ka, le pergélisol était présent dans certaines tourbières, mais la zone de répartition était de 300 à 500 km plus au nord que maintenant. On estime que la température devait être de 5°C plus chaude qu'actuellement.

Die Ausdehnung und Verteilung von Permafrost in Torfmooren vor 6000 Jahren wurden in den heutigen diskontinuierlichen und kontinuierlichen Permafrost-Zonen von Zentral-West-Kanada untersucht. An 161 Plàtzen hat man Kernbohrungen in den Permafrost-Torfmooren durchgefùhrt und mittels der makrofossilen Analyse die Flora-Kompositon des Torfs bestimmt. Man erhielt eine chronologische Kontrolle mittels Radiokarbondatierung von gewichtigen Verànderungen in den Torfsequenzen und mittels der Daten von Torfablagerungen an der Basis. Die Torfbildung begann, nachdem das glaziale Eis von der Landoberflâche von Zentral-West-Kanada verschwunden war. Die Makrofossile zeigen, daB die meisten Torfmoore um 6 ka Moore ohne Permafrost waren, auBer im hohen Norden. Permafrost gab es schon in vielen Gebieten der Arktis, und die Torfakkumulation geschah unter Permafrost-Bedingungen. Im sud- lichen Teil begann die Permafrost-Entwicklung in den Torfmooren um etwa 4 ka, als die mittlere warme Holozàn-Periode dem Ende zuging. Die Permafrost-Entwicklung in den Mooren war mit der Entwicklung einer von Sphagnum dominierten Oberflàche der Moore verbunden, hervorgerufen durch den Beginn eines kùhleren und feuchteren Klimas. Die Isolierung, die durch die Oberflàchenschicht und durch die damit verbundene Baumbedeckung hervorgerufen wurde, erzeugte Permafrost-Entwicklung in kleinen Linsen, welche sich zu breiten Permafrost-Einheiten vereinigten, entsprechend den vorherrschenden klimatischen Bedingungen. Um 6 ka gab es Permafrost in einigen Torfmooren, aber die Verteilungszonen waren 300 bis 500 km nôrdlicher als heute. Man schàtzt, daB dies einer durch-schnittlichen Jahrestemperatur entspricht, die um etwa 5°C warmer als heute war.

British Columbia Holocene vegetation and climate is reconstructed from pollen records. A coastal Pinus contorta paleobiome developed after glacier retreat under cool and probably dry climate. Cool moist forests involving Picea, Abies, Tsuga spp., and Pinus followed until the early Holocene. Pseudotsuga menziesii arrived and spread in the south 10 000-9000 BP, and Picea sitchensis - Tsuga heterophylla forests developed in the north. T. heterophylla increased 7500-7000 BP, and Cupressaceae expanded 5000-4000 BP. Bogs began to develop and expland. Modern vegetation arose 4000-2000 BP. There were early Holocene grass and Artemisia communities at mid-elevations and pine stands at high elevations in southern interior B.C. Forests expanded downslope and lakes formed 8500-7000 BP. Modern forests arose 4500-4000 BP while lower and upper tree lines declined. In northern B.C. non-arboreal communities preceded middle Holocene Picea forests. Abies, Pinus and Picea mariana predominated at various sites after 4000 BP. At 6000 BP Tsuga heterophylla (south) and Picea sitchensis (north) dominated the coast and islands and Quercus garryana and Pseudotsuga on southeast Vancouver Island, but Thuja plicata was infrequent. Southern Interior Plateau vegetation at 6000 BP was more open than today at middle to lower elevations, whereas forests covered the Northern Interior Plateau. Picea forests occurred in northern B.C. Holocene climate phases were: 1) warm dry "xerothermic" ca. 9500-7000 BP, 2) warm moist "mesothermic" ca. 7000-4500 BP, 3) moderate and moist 4500-0 BP, with increasing moisture 8500-6000 BP and cooling (?increased moisture) 4500-3000 BP. B.Cs Hypsithermal had dry and wet stages; 6000 BP occurred in the warm and wet mesothermic stage.

Synthesis of available paleoecological studies in the Prairie provinces of Canada indicates that although the peak in postglacial aridity that characterized early Holocene climate of the western foothills and plains had passed, conditions remained warmer and drier than present throughout the region ca. 6000 yr BP Compared to today, treeline elevations were higher and alpine glaciers were reduced in size in the Rocky Mountains, lake levels were lower over much of the Interior Plains, and the grassland and boreal forest ecozones extended north of their present positions. Forest fires were more prevalent ca. 6000 yr BP than they are today, aiding westward migration of jack pine (Pinus banksiana) through the boreal forest and increasing the area occupied by grassland in boreal and montane forest regions. Attempts to quantify the magnitude of 6 ka temperature and precipitation differences have produced variable results, but suggest that mean annual temperature was 0.50°C to 1.50°C higher than today (summer temperature may have been up to 3°C higher) and mean annual precipitation was reduced by 65 mm (or summer precipitation was reduced by 50 mm), compared to present. The nature and scale of these changes suggests that a vigorous zonal atmospheric circulation pattern, similar to that of the 1930s but shifted northward, prevailed at 6 ka.

Pollen stratigraphy from 90 sites in and bordering the Great Lakes record the 5-7 ka history of forest development of the Great Lakes region. By 7 ka beech (Fagus grandifolia) had invaded the oak-hickory (Quercus-Carya) forest of lower Michigan and hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) and beech the white pine (Pinus strobus)-dominated forest of southern Ontario. At the same time, white pine replaced jack pine (P banksiana) as it expanded northward to the Clay Belt beyond its present-day range. Forest changes at 6 and 5 ka were dominated by range extensions of beech and hemlock in a northwesterly direction, by northward expansion of eastern white cedar (Cupressineae), and southward migration of white pine into the Michigan basin. The beech and hemlock migrations (160 m yr^-1 and 280 m yr^-1, respectively) may have been influenced by the cool-moist climate generated by the Nipissing Great Lakes in combination with enhanced regional warming. White pine and eastern white cedar responded to regional warming and reduced precipitation, whereas birch (Betula) and alder (Alnus) may have been influenced more by fire activity caused by the warm-dry climate. The boreal-mixed forest ecotone was displaced 140 km northward at 5-7 ka compared to 60-70 km for the mixed-deciduous forest ecotone.

Ces différences sont attribuables 1) à une migration tardive de certaines essences, telles le pin gris (Pinus banksiana) dans les Pessières occidentales ou le hêtre à grande feuilles (Fagus grandifolia) dans les Érablières, 2) à une incidence généralement plus faible des feux naturels, 3) à un entourbement moindre des stations hydriques, et 4) à un climat dans l'ensemble plus clément. A cartographie reconstruction of the vegetational cover of Québec-Labrador for 6 ka BP is based on palynological and plant macrofossil records. A dense Shrub Tundra occupied the stretches of land between marine waters (Tyrrell Sea or d'lberville Sea) and the residual ice masses that still occupied over 100 000 km², from Ungava (Nunavik) to the Schefferville area. This Tundra belt was narrow along the southern limit of glaciers but expanded eastward to a width of more than 400 km, extending to the Labrador Sea north of latitude 54°. The tree-line thus ran approximately through the middle of the present-day Taiga zone (open boreal forest), but the northern limit of the Closed Forest already corresponded to its modern position. Like the Tundra, the 6 ka BP Taiga was shrubby, more dense, and more diversified than todays, probably due to favorable climatic conditions but also because soils contained more nutrients than today. The southern forest vegetation zones, dominated respectively by spruce, fir, and maple, generally occupied their modern positions, but the abundance of some companion tree-species differed markedly from the modern. The differences are attributed 1) to delayed migration, as in the case of jack pine (Pinus banksiana) in the Western Spruce Forest domain or American beech (Fagus grandifolia) in the Maple Forest domain, 2) to a generally lower incidence of natural fires, 3) to a lower impact of paludification on hydric sites, and 4) to an overall milder climate. An analysis of the records at a regional scale permits the identification of more detailed, ultimately climatically-controlled phytogeographic gradients and fields, especially in mountain and subalpine zones.

Environmental conditions (vegetation and climate) of Maritime Canada are reconstructed as a regional contribution to a national synthesis on the paleoenvironment of Canada 6000 yr BP. Ten new sites, including three complete sequences and seven short sequences bracketing the 6 ka period, are added to the existing pollen dataset for this region. The vegetation prevalent 6000 yr BP in New Brunswick was a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest with pine, mostly white pine (Pinus strobus) in the northwest, and a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest with hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) in the south and southeast. In the northwest, fir (Abies) replaced pine at high elevations and a boreal forest grew on the New Brunswick Highlands. The dominant vegetation at 6000 yr BP in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia was a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest with hemlock dominating. Cape Breton Island was covered by a mixed coniferous-deciduous forest with pine and/or fir, except for the southern part of the Island where hemlock was probably present. Analysis of the fossil sites indicate that a warm-dry period influenced the composition of the vegetation 6000 yr BP.

A 6 ka reconstruction for the island of Newfoundland is presented in the context of a synthesis of Holocene pollen records for twelve sites within or at the margin of the boreal forest, five of which are new. Climatic reconstruction is based primarily on representation of the major boreal taxa: balsam fir, spruce, birch and pine, with charcoal data for some sites. The period of greatest Holocene warmth began at 6 ka. Although temperatures at inland sites were at or close to modern values as early as 8.5-8.0 ka, it was not until 6 ka on the Avalon Peninsula, in the southeast, and 5.5 ka in the north, that coastal sites registered expansion of more thermophilous taxa. Thus oceanic warming lagged terrestrial warming. Temperatures during the period of greatest warmth were no more than 1.0°C higher than modern, based on fluctuations of the upper forest limit and post-Hypsithermal contraction of the range of indicator taxa. Fire importance increased after 6 ka as pine expanded, but moisture availability also increased. The first indications of cooling occurred on the coast at 4.5-4.0 ka, but at different times after 4.0 ka inland; thus oceanic cooling led terrestrial cooling. The latest Holocene has been cool, moist and relatively free from fire.

Die Rekonstruktion wird im Kontext der Synthèse von Holozân-Pollenbelegen von zwôlf Plâtzen innerhalb oder am Rand des nôrdlichen Nadelwaldgùrtels vorgestellt, von denen fùnf neu sind. Die Klima-Rekonstruktion stùtzt sich vor allem auf das Vorkommen der hauptsàchlichen borealen Taxa: Balsam-tanne, Fichte, Birke und Kiefer, mit Kohledaten fur manche Plàtze. Die wàrmste Période im Holozàn begann um 6 ka. Wenn auch die Temperaturen an Inlandplatzen bei oder nahe bei modernen Werten zu einer so frùhen Zeit wie 8.5 -8.0 ka lagen, geschah es auf der Avalon-Halbinsel nicht vor 6 ka im Sùdwesten und 5.5 ka im Norden, daB die Kùstenplàtze die Ausbreitung von thermophileren Taxa registrierten. So folgte die Ozean-Erwârmung auf die Erd-Erwârmung. Wâhrend der Période der hôchsten Warme waren die Temperaturen nicht mehr als 1.00C hôher als heute, bestimmt aufgrund der Fluktuationen der oberen Waldgrenze und der post-hypsithermalen Schrumpfung der Série von Beleg-Taxa. Mit der Ausbreitung der Kiefer nach 6 ka hat die Bedeutung der Feuer zugenommen, aberder Feuchtigkeits-Vorrat nahm auch zu. Die ersten Zeichen einer Abkùhlung traten an der Kùste um 4.5-4.0 ka auf, jedoch im Inland zu verschiedenen Zeiten nach 4.0 ka; so fùhrte die Abkùhlung des Ozeans zu einer Abkùhlung des Festlands. Das jùngste Holozàn war kalt, feucht und relativ feuerfrei.
