Résumé
Le présent article explore quelques-uns des enjeux méthodologiques que soulève la notion de « vie culturelle » sur laquelle repose le projet de recherche Penser l’histoire de la vie culturelle au Québec, dont l’objectif général est de préparer une histoire de la culture artistique au Québec de la fin du xixe au milieu du xxe siècle. La notion de culture qui fonde le projet sert d’abord à poser l’hypothèse de traits communs, récurrents et transversaux aux diverses disciplines artistiques et à briser l’isolement de ces disciplines instituées en étudiant la circulation des concepts et des schèmes cognitifs, ainsi que celle des figures, des formes et des thèmes plus spécifiques à notre objet. La notion de « vie » est là pour contrer celle de « structure » ; elle sert à introduire le mouvement, l’incertitude, l’inachèvement, l’incomplétude. Quatre problèmes sont envisagés plus spécifiquement : le temps comme altérité, la configuration de l’objet, la périodisation et le statut de l’oeuvre artistique.
Abstract
This article explores some of the methodological issues raised by the concept of “culture” that lies at the foundation of the research project titled Thinking about the Cultural History of Quebec, the overall objective of which is to prepare a history of artistic culture in Quebec from the late nineteenth to the mid twentieth century. First, the notion of culture is used to propose common and recurrent traits that cut across various artistic disciplines, and to break down the isolation that characterizes these disciplines, by studying the circulation of concepts and cognitive patterns, as well as that of figures, forms, and themes more directly related to the project’s objectives. The notion of “life” is opposed to that of “structure,” serving to introduce movement, uncertainty, and incompleteness. More specifically, four problems are considered : time as otherness, the configuration of the object, periodization, and the status of a work of art.
