Résumé
Les notions et gestion du temps chez les Inuits de l’Arctique oriental canadien ont été fortement ébranlées par les grandes mutations (christianisation, sédentarisation, scolarisation, etc.) qu’ils ont vécues aux XIXe et XXe siècles. Ces bouleversements ont créé des tensions entre les pratiques traditionnelles du temps et les nombreuses contraintes imposées par les nouvelles réalités. Après avoir évoqué les modes de repérage et de division du temps inuits avant l’établissement de contacts suivis avec les Blancs, puis l’introduction du calendrier grégorien et des moyens techniques de mesure du temps, l’auteur montre que la cohabitation forcée ou peut-être la collision des deux modes de temporalité produit un système hybride de gestion du temps, qui consiste à satisfaire autant que faire se peut aux exigences du moment, tout en les associant aux pratiques culturelles qui se sont transmises entre générations. Dans cette coexistence des temps, il s’est ainsi établi des modes de fonctionnement individuels et sociaux qui évoluent le long d’un continuum. Aussi souvent que possible, je procéderai à l’analyse morpho-sémantique des termes rencontrés, afin d’en révéler la signification littérale, qui seule donne accès à la structure sémantique sous-jacente.
Abstract
Time sense and timekeeping among the Inuit of the eastern Canadian Arctic have been deeply shaken by the major changes (the advent of Christianity, the adoption of a sedentary lifestyle, the establishment of schools, etc.) that have taken place during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These upheavals have created tensions between the traditional practices regarding time and the numerous constraints imposed by new circumstances. After discussing the Inuit methods for describing and dividing time before the establishment of contact with Whites, as well as the introduction of the Gregorian calendar and technical methods for measuring time, the author shows that the forced cohabitation, or perhaps collision, of these two modes of temporality has produced a hybrid system of timekeeping that must satisfy the demands of the moment to the extent possible, while maintaining an association with cultural practices transmitted from generation to generation. In this co-existence of times, individual and social methods of functioning are established that evolve along a continuum. A morpho-semantic analysis of relevant terms is also conducted in order to reveal the literal meaning that alone can provide access to the underlying semantic structure.
