Résumé
Les études québécoises sont en pleine croissance dans le milieu universitaire britannique depuis le début des années 1980, suite aux efforts de Cedric May. Membre fondateur de l’Association britannique des études canadiennes (BACS), il est à l’origine de groupes de travail (le GRECF, Canada in School) essentiels à la promotion de l’étude du Québec. Ce défrichage a donné lieu à un champ de recherche aujourd’hui florissant, principalement en littérature et en sciences politiques. La grande qualité des publications disponibles témoigne d’ailleurs d’une profonde connaissance de la culture québécoise. Avec la création de la première chaire en études québécoises à l’Université de Leeds et la fondation du premier Centre d’études québécoises au Royaume-Uni à l’Université de Leicester tout récemment, on ne peut qu’envisager d’un bon oeil l’avenir des études québécoises au Royaume-Uni.
Abstract
Quebec studies have been expanding in British universities since the beginning of the 1980s, following the initiatives taken by Cedric May. As a founding member of the British Association for Canadian Studies (BACS), he has played a key role in the creation of research groups (the GRECF, Canada in School) essential in promoting the study of Quebec. This groundwork has cleared the way for research which has now become vibrant, mainly in the fields of literature and political science. Moreover, the high quality of available publications attests to a deep knowledge of Quebec culture. With the creation of the first Chair of Quebec Studies at the University of Leeds, and the very recent founding of the first Centre for Quebec Studies in the United Kingdom at the University of Leicester, the future of Quebec studies in the United Kingdom can only he considered favourably.
