Summary
Freshwater ecosystems are a major component of the northern environment. The application of new limnological technologies and approaches to these ecosystems is producing a revised perspective on their structure and dynamics, and is leading to insights into their potential response to global change processes.The planktonic communities of northern lakes are dominated by microbial food webs, with components that are highly sensitive to changes in temperature. North-south transects in Quebec, Yukon and the Northwest Territories show that lakes beyond the northern tree line have concentrations of UV-screening dissolved organic carbon less than 5 mg-l'1, rendering them vulnerable to changes in incident UVB and to climatic effects on catchment hydrology. The coupling of studies on the modern-day limnology of northern freshwater ecosystems with paleolimnological approaches will allow the interpretation of short-term changes in these systems within the context of their historical variability.
Résumé
Les écosystèmes d'eau douce sont une composante majeure du paysage nor-dique. L'application de nouvelles ap-proches et technologies pour l'étude deces écosystèmes est en voie de changernos perspectives concernant leur struc-ture, leur dynamique et leur réponse po-tentielle face aux changements globaux.Les communautés planctoniques des lacsnordiques sont dominées par le réseaualimentaire microbien dont les compo-santes sont très sensibles aux change-ments de température. Plusieurs re-cherches effectuées sur des lacs loca-lisés le long de transects latitudinaux auQuébec, au Yukon et dans les Territoiresdu Nord-Ouest, ont démontré que les lacssitués au-delà de la limite nord des arbressont caractérisés par des concentrationsen carbone organique dissous inférieur à5 mgt'. Ces lacs sont donc particulière-ment vulnérables aux changements durayonnement ultraviolet et aux effets desvariations climatiques sur l'hydrologie deleurs bassins versants. La combinaisondes études portant sur la limnologieactuelle et la paléolimnologie permettral'interprétation des changements à courtterme de ces écosystèmes dans le con-texte de leur variabilité historique.
