Summary
The 32,000 km coastline of China can beclassified into two major types: the bed-rock embayed coast and the plainscoast. The distribution of these types iscontrolled by geological and tectonicsetting, particularly zones of uplift andsubsidence. The sedmentary processesalong the coast of China are greatlyaffected by the large rivers which deliverenormous amounts of sediment. Thesediment supplied is redistributed bymonsoon waves and tidal currents.Within tropical and subtropical climatezones, the growth of mangrove and cor-als is also an important factor in coast-line formation.
The coastal research in China is com-bined with various coastal engineeringprojects, which require information oncoastal processes for the installation ofport facilities. Thus practical require-ments advances the understanding ofcoastal dynamic geomorphology.
