Résumé
Le statut du cadavre dépend du statut culturel de la mort. Il ne peut que renvoyer les cultures et les sensibilités individuelles à un débat sans fin. Savoir si le corps n’est qu’un objet indifférent après la mort ou s’il demeure l’homme est une interrogation sans issue. La réponse se fonde uniquement sur des arguments culturels, une vision du monde, un univers de valeurs, elle dépend des représentations de la mort, du corps, elle implique une définition sociale de la personne.

Abstract
The status of the corpse depends on the cultural status of death, which can only lead to unending debate amongst individual cultures and sensibilities. Knowing whether a body is an indifferent object after death or whether it remains a person is a question without answer. The response is uniquely based on cultural arguments, a worldview, a multitude of different values. It depends on the representations of death, of the body ; it involves a social definition of the person.
