Comment le texte touche le corps

Résumé

Le corps est la plupart du temps absent des théories de la réception : on évoque peu sa matérialité (le corps « objet »), encore moins son sentir (le corps « sujet ») empreint de pensée. À cette résistance correspond sans doute le trouble qu’il sème sur notre appréhension de la lecture comme activité herméneutique. Penser le corps dans la réception implique d’emblée l’examen de son inéluctable bouleversement sur le sens du texte : le lecteur, investi affectivement dans le livre, y plonge avec son histoire, ses souvenirs, ses désirs. Il ne décode plus seulement le texte mais il le « sur-code », dit Roland Barthes, y ajoute des éléments et, en définitive, le « pervertit ». Mais lire avec son corps, cela signifie surtout, pour nous, aller au-delà du sens, le dépasser, peut-être même l’ignorer, pour découvrir autre chose : la possibilité de se faire toucher par le livre en dehors des mots. Ce « quelque chose » qui nous touche, ce serait l’auteur présent dans le texte en tant que corps ; voilà l’origine d’une réception sensorielle, voire sensuelle, que nous nous proposons d’esquisser dans le cadre de cet article en rapprochant la pensée de Roland Barthes de celle de Jean-Luc Nancy.

Abstract

Most theories around reception do not address the body. Its materiality (i.e. the body as an object) is seldom raised, its thought-infused feelings (i.e. the body as a subject) even less so. This reluctance probably echoes how the body affects our approach to reading as a hermeneutical activity. Yet, ignoring the body in our reception is tantamount to foregoing the specifics of the relationship between a writer and his readers. How do they connect through the text ? How do their bodies come into contact ? Those are questions arising from their “hetero-affection”, from which we seek to look at literature as a model of our communal body.

To address the body in the context of reception immediately implies analysing its unavoidable impact on the meaning of the written word. The reader is emotionally involved in the book and colors his reading with his own history, his memories, and his desires. According to Roland Barthes, the reader no longer simply decodes the text ; he “overwrites” it with foreign elements and, ultimately, corrupts it. Reading with our body, however, implies going beyond or even ignoring the meaning of the text in our quest for something else : the possibility that an element other than the words will tug at our strings. This element would be the author as represented by his body throughout his text, a source of sensory — and perhaps sensual ? — reception. It is what we propose to discuss in this article by meshing the thoughts of both Roland Barthes and Jean-Luc Nancy.
