Abstracts
Résumé
Historiquement, l’usage de la force armée constitue une source de division au sein de la société canadienne, où plusieurs conceptions s’opposent. Parmi celles-ci, la conception militariste de la « nation guerrière » et sa diplomatie robuste ont gagné en vitalité depuis l’arrivée au pouvoir des conservateurs en 2006. Au coeur de la stratégie conservatrice pour substituer à l’identité internationaliste (libérale) du Canada les fondements d’un nouveau « parti de gouvernement naturel », ce discours militariste tranche avec l’approche habituellement prudente des gouvernements précédents sur la question depuis un demi-siècle. Loin de contribuer à rallier la société canadienne, ce virage révèle et exacerbe les tensions au pays, faisant au passage une victime collatérale de premier ordre : l’unité nationale.

Abstract
Historically, the use of armed force constitutes a source of division within Canadian society in which several conceptions oppose one another. Among them, the militarist conception of the “warrior nation” and its robust diplomacy have gained in strength since the coming to power of the Conservatives in 2006. At the heart of the conservative strategy to replace Canada’s internationalist (Liberal) identity with the foundation of a “natural governing party”, this militarist discourse breaks with the generally cautious approach of preceding governments over the last half-century. This being so, this change, far from contributing to rally Canadian society, reveals and exacerbates the tensions within the country, with the result that national unity becomes a collateral victim of the first order.

Resumen
Históricamente, el uso de la fuerza armada ha constituido una fuente de división en el seno de la sociedad canadiense, donde distintas concepciones militaristas se oponen. Entre ellas, la concepción de la « nación guerrera » y la de la diplomacia robusta han sido adoptadas con vehemencia desde que los conservadores llegaron al poder en 2006. En el corazón de la estrategia conservadora para substituir la de la identidad internacional (liberal) de Canadá, los fundamentos de un nuevo “natural ruling partyʺ, un discurso militarista contrasta con el enfoque cauteloso de los gobiernos precedentes desde hace medio siglo. Este viraje, lejos de contribuir a unir a la sociedad canadiense, revela y exacerba las tensiones dentro del país y provoca una víctima colateral de primer orden: la unidad nacional.
