En 1962 paraissait Paix et guerre entre les nations, l’ouvrage majeur que Raymond Aron a consacré au thème des relations internationales. Cinquante ans après, la pensée internationale et stratégique d’Aron a-t-elle encore quelque chose à nous dire ? Peut-elle encore irriguer la recherche et inspirer les internationalistes en dépit des évolutions majeures de la discipline ? En un demi-siècle, la discipline des Relations internationales a en effet connu un remarquable essor, développant de nombreux programmes de recherche et ouvrant de multiples « débats » qui ont vu de nouveaux paradigmes, comme le constructivisme et le transnationalisme, concurrencer les théories réaliste et libérale, dont Aron est le plus proche. Dans ce contexte, ce dernier peut-il être considéré comme un « classique » de la pensée internationale, au même titre que Hans Morgenthau, Kenneth Waltz, Michael Doyle ou Alexander Wendt, bien qu’il ne forge pas, car il n’y croit pas, de théorie générale des relations internationales ? De même, à l’âge des conflits « fluides », de l’économie mondialisée et du terrorisme international, est-il encore nécessaire de lire un auteur dont la biographie est étroitement liée aux conflits interétatiques du 20e siècle – en particulier la guerre froide – qui sont désormais révolus ? Que reste-t-il, en 2012, du Raymond Aron penseur des relations internationales ? Telles sont les questions qui ont guidé la démarche de ce dossier et qui sont communes à tous les articles qui le composent. À l’évidence, celui-ci n’existerait pas si les contributeurs n’avaient accepté d’emblée l’idée que l’oeuvre d’Aron a quelque chose à dire aux chercheurs du 21e siècle. Affirmer que la lecture d’Aron est encore pertinente cinquante ans après la parution de son imposant traité et plus de trente ans après sa mort, voilà qui, pourtant, ne va de soi. La tendance générale, en Relations internationales et plus généralement dans les sciences sociales, est au présentisme (Hartog 2003). Dans un contexte où la connaissance se veut essentiellement cumulative, ne comptent en effet que les ouvrages et les articles les plus récents, qu’il s’agit de discuter pour au plus vite les dépasser. Ainsi l’étude des grandes figures de la connaissance est-elle le plus souvent réservée aux historiens de la pensée, tandis que les chercheurs qui travaillent sur le contemporain vouent la plupart du temps une reconnaissance polie aux « grands ancêtres », sans procéder à une lecture approfondie et « utile » de leurs oeuvres. Aron fait donc partie de ces auteurs souvent cités par déférence, mais rarement lus et commentés (Roche 2011b : 11). C’est la raison pour laquelle il n’est sans doute pas inutile de faire ressortir les lignes de force du corpus aronien dans le domaine international et stratégique, puis de revenir sur la réception de son oeuvre chez les internationalistes. Enfin, nous présenterons chacune des contributions qui composent ce numéro spécial. Journaliste et universitaire, philosophe et sociologue, penseur des relations internationales et observateur de la vie politique française, Raymond Aron peut donner l’impression d’être un touche-à-tout dont l’oeuvre se caractérise par la dispersion. Quoi de commun en effet entre ses ouvrages sur les relations internationales (Le grand débat, Paix et guerre entre les nations, Penser la guerre, Clausewitz…) et ses livres sur l’histoire de la pensée sociologique (Les étapes de la pensée sociologique), la gauche intellectuelle (L’opium des intellectuels) et la société industrielle (Les désillusions du progrès) ? Le caractère apparemment hétéroclite de l’oeuvre aronienne la rend difficilement situable dans le champ académique, à l’heure où la spécialisation s’impose dans les sciences sociales.
