Résumé

Dans un épisode saisissant du Livre de Daniel mieux connu sous le titre Le Festin de Balthazar, une main se met à écrire des mots cryptiques sur le mur d’un palais babylonien. Cet article compare deux reprises de cette scène biblique : Le Festin de Balthazar de Rembrandt et L’Emploi du temps de Michel Butor.Dans un premier temps, nous proposerons une analyse du tableau de Rembrandt que nous compléterons par celle de Michel Butor, qui pose de façon judicieuse le paradoxe entre le regard et l’aveuglement dans l’œuvre du peintre. Puis, dans un second temps, nous verrons comment l’épisode du Festin de Balthazar se déploie dans L’Emploi du temps, car si la présence de certains épisodes de l’intertexte biblique – Caïn et Abel, le mythe de Babel, l’Apocalypse – a déjà été amplement explorée dans ce roman, l’attention des chercheurs s’est peu portée sur le Festin de Balthazar, épisode pourtant central, selon nous. En faisant donc une analyse détaillée de ces deux reprises du Festin de Balthazar, nous verrons que les frontières entre texte et image se brouillent lorsque les lettres divines dans ces oeuvres ne forment plus nécessairement des mots. In a gripping biblical episode in the Book of Daniel known as Belshazzar’s Feast, a hand begins to write a cryptic message on the wall of a Babylonian palace. This article compares two reworkings of this biblical scene: Rembrandt’s Belshazzar’s Feast and Michel Butor’s L’Emploi du temps.

Abstract

In the first part of the article, I examine Rembrandt’s Belshazzar’s Feast in light of Butor’s interpretation of Rembrandt’s sight/blindness paradox. In the second part of the article, I then outline the numerous ways in which Belshazzar’s Feast flourishes in Butor’s own L’Emploi du temps. While numerous researchers have highlighted the importance of biblical intertextualities in this novel – Cain and Abel, Babel, the Apocalypse – Belshazzar’s Feast has been largely overlooked, despite being central to the text. Through a detailed analysis of both Rembrandt and Butor’s representations of Belshazzar’s Feast, I argue that, for both artists, the traditional distinctions between text and image blur when the mysterious and divine letters in this biblical scene cease to necessarily form words.
