Résumé
Jeffrey C. Alexander (1947-) semble avoir succédé depuis quelques années à Talcott Parsons (1902-1979) au titre du sociologue américain le plus influent. Comme Parsons, son oeuvre s’est d’abord construite sur une réinterprétation critique des auteurs classiques. C’est en grande partie par le biais d’une étude des écrits durkheimiens conférant aux Formes élémentaires de la vie religieuse un statut particulier que les deux auteurs ont élaboré, chacun à leur manière, une théorie volontariste de l’action sociale et une théorie émergentiste de l’ordre social. Au-delà des différences de leurs interprétations fondées sur leurs manières d’identifier des étapes dans le développement de la pensée durkheimienne, leur similarité consiste à centrer leur attention sur sa théorie de la religion pour la rabattre à une théorie de l’action sociale.

Abstract
Over the last decades, Jeffrey Alexander seemed to have replaced Talcott Parsons as the most influential American sociologist. As it is the case for Parsons’s, Alexander’s work is mainly based on a strong interpretation of the founding fathers of sociology. It is in part by reinterpreting the place of religion in Durkheim’s works that both authors managed to present a voluntaristic theory of social action and a emergentistic theory of social order. This papers shows that above the apparent disagreements of their respective interpretations of Durkheim’s work, Parsons and Alexander both tend to present Durkheim’s theory of religion as a reductive social action theory.

Resumen
Jeffrey C. Alexander (1947- ) parece haber sucedido después de algunos años a Talcott Parsons (1902-1979) a título del sociólogo americano más influyente. Como Parsons, su obra se construye en un principio sobre una reinterpretación crítica de los autores clásicos. Se debe en gran parte a un estudio de los escritos durkhemianos que confieren a los FEVR un status particular, que los dos autores han elaborado -cada uno a su manera- una teoría voluntarista de la acción social y una teoría emergente del orden social. Mas allá de las diferencias entre sus interpretaciones fundadas sobre las maneras de identificar las distintas etapas dentro del desarrollo del pensamiento durkheimiano, sus similitudes consisten en centrar la atención sobre la teoría de la religión para acercarse a una teoría de la acción social.
