Résumé
Le présent article explore les relations entre la confiance, les connaissances et l’expertise dans le contexte de l’action policière (policing). Dans un premier temps, l’auteur analyse, à la lumière des résultats des recherches récentes sur la police, les divers modèles d’action policière apparus depuis la fin des années 1960 et les regroupe en trois grandes tendances selon leur façon de concevoir les relations entre la police et les citoyens. Ensuite, il examine comment la police peut établir une plus grande confiance entre elle et le public et contribuer à améliorer les relations mutuelles de confiance entre les citoyens. En conclusion, l’auteur propose quelques critères pour reconnaître le caractère démocratique d’une police.

Abstract
This article explore the relationships between trust, knowledge and expertise in matters of policing. Firstly, the author analyses different models of police action, in light of the results of empirical studies on policing published since 1960, and that he groups in three main tendencies according to their way of seeing the relationship between citizens and the police. Secondly, he examines how the police can enhance the public’s trust towards itself and improve mutual relationships of trust between citizens. The author concludes by proposing criteria aimed at recognising the democratic character of a police force.

Resumen
El presente artículo analiza las relaciones entre la confianza, los conocimientos y la profesionalización en la acción policiaca. En primera instancia el autor analiza, a partir de los resultados de investigaciones recientes, los diversos modelos de acción policial surgidos luego de los años 1960, que agrupa en tres grandes tendencias según la forma de concebir las relaciones entre la policía y los ciudadanos. Aborda a continuación la manera en que la policía puede establecer una relación de mayor confianza con la ciudadanía para contribuir con ello a mejorar las relaciones mutuas. Por último, el autor propone algunos criterios para reconocer el carácter democrático de una agrupación policiaca.
