Abstract
Planning in the context of a housing emergency by both public and private sector professionals often adopts a forward-focused approach, obscuring the context that created the emergency and ignoring the perspectives of those who have experienced the emergency first-hand. This article discusses the research project, Recording Our Truth, which engaged Elders from Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) territory in their lived experience of the housing emergency that is ongoing in the territory. The project sought to understand: how did the current housing emergency begin? And could learning about its beginning lead toward solutions? Answers to these questions were sought through interviews and mapping with Elders who had experienced the emergency over their lifetimes, leading to nuanced insights on how experiences of home, housing, and homeland have been shaped by violent colonial histories, and lessons for the future of addressing the housing emergency in NAN territory.

Résumé
Dans le contexte d'une crise de logement, l’aménagement, tant par les professionnels des secteurs public que privé, adopte souvent une approche prospective, occultant le contexte à l'origine de la crise et ignorant le point de vue de ceux qui la vivent directement. Cet article discute du projet de recherche « Enregistrer notre vérité », qui a engagé des aînés du territoire de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski (NAN) dans leur expérience vécue de la crise du logement qui est actuellement en cours sur leur territoire. Le projet visait à comprendre : comment la crise du logement actuelle a-t-elle débuté? Et est-ce que la compréhension de ses origines pouvait mener à des solutions ? Les réponses à ces questions ont été recherchées grâce à des entretiens et à une cartographie auprès d'aînés autochtones ayant vécu cette crise directement, menant à des perspectives nuancées sur la façon dont les expériences du foyer, du logement et de la patrie ont été façonnées par une histoire coloniale violente, ainsi qu’à des renseignements pour l'avenir face à la crise du logement sur le territoire de la NAN.
