L’improvisation et ses lieux communs (Pays de l’Oach, Roumanie) Improvisation and its Commonplaces (Oach, Romania)

Résumé

L’article rappelle un certain nombre d’acquis concernant les études sur l’improvisation, principalement la notion de « modèle ». Mais cette notion trouve ses limites lorsqu’il s’agit de rendre compte du processus même de l’improvisation, de saisir l’inattendu, et même d’examiner de près des stratégies musicales enclenchées dans l’instant. En outre, dans nombre de traditions orales - dont l’inventaire est loin d’être achevé -, les régularités structurelles et la notion même de modèle semblent faire problème. Ce phénomène avait déjà été relevé par Bartók à propos de musiques paysannes de Roumanie. Il est ici approfondi. C’est ainsi qu’au nord de la Roumanie, en Oach, les violonistes (souvent tsiganes) sont invités, contre rétribution, non pas à reproduire des formes fixes, mais à produire le plus grand nombre possible de courts motifs modaux, pour « appâter » les chanteurs. Durant la performance, au déroulement imprévisible, ces derniers extraient de ce jeu motivique leur dants, c’est-à-dire une mélodie complète qui leur est propre et qui ne se confond pas avec celle des autres chanteurs qui sont aussi leurs rivaux.

Abstract

This article reviews a certain number of findings derived from studies of improvisation, which primarily concern the notion of ‘model’. This notion is of limited value when trying to capture the very process of improvisation, to grasp the unexpected, and even to closely examine the musical strategies adopted in the instant. Moreover, in many oral traditions – the inventory of which is far from completed – the structural regularities and the notion of model seem problematic. This phenomenon was already noticed by Bartók with respect to the peasant musics of Rumania, and is here further examined. So it is that in the north of Rumania, in Oach, violinists (often of gypsy heritage) are asked, for a fee, not to reproduce fixed forms, but rather to produce as many short modal motifs as possible in order to ‘lure’ the singers. During these unpredictable performances, these singers extract their own personal /dants/ from this set of motives, i.e., a complete melody which belongs to them alone and which is not to be confused with any of the melodies used by their rival singers.
