Résumé
Conférence inaugurale de R. M. Schafer prononcée le 9 décembre 1999 à l’occasion des journées montréalaises nommées « Le Quatuor selon Schafer » et organisées par le Quatuor Molinari. Le compositeur y traite de la symbolique et des archétypes jungiens du nombre quatre et de ses relations avec le quatuor à cordes. Différentes évocations de la tradition du quatuor et de cultures variées sont reliées à la question de l’unité et de l’équilibre du quatuor. La conception du quatuor du compositeur s’y fait jour, notamment à travers l’opposition entre plénitude et déchirement qui y est exprimée.
Abstract
In Montreal, on December 9, 1999, R. Murray Schafer was invited as keynote speaker to an event organized by the Molinari Quartet. During his inaugural address to this event, entitled “The Quartet According to Schafer”, he outlined some of the relations existing between the string quartet and a number of symbolic implications, including the jungian archetypes relating to the number four. By means of examples of string quartets stemming from different cultural traditions, he proceeds to appraise these in terms of the unifying characteristics and an overall balance found in the string quartet. The composer also spells out his own position, most notably how he deals with the opposition between expressions of serenity and angst.
