Abstract
Researchers have conducted several studies on territorial development—most often using positivist methods—to try to understand why there are differences in dynamics between peripheral and central regions. The results, however, are limited to somewhat interdependent variables and do not converge. Using the data available for Québec’s ninety-seven regional county municipalities, we further analyzed the variables under four broad socioeconomic dimensions in order to better understand both their significance and complementarity. We used not only quantitative regression but also qualitative analysis. This research was complemented by a phenomenological approach that generated several other variables. This analysis thus includes fifteen socioeconomic variables, one complex sociocultural variable, and four spatial variables, while opening the door to two informal variables.
