Résumé
Cet article a pour objectif de présenter les différentes trajectoires de la géographie de la population depuis les années 1950. Plus spécifiquement, il propose un bilan sur les plans théorique, méthodologique et thématique de cette sous-discipline de la géographie en portant une attention sur les recherches entreprises par les géographes québécois. Ainsi, nous abordons l’objet de la géographie de la population dans les géographies nationales et les raisons pour lesquelles cette sous-discipline s’est cantonnée surtout dans une approche positiviste. La section suivante dresse une synthèse des recherches entreprises sur les trois composantes de la démographie, soit la fécondité, la mortalité et les migrations. Dans ce bilan, nous verrons que les travaux de recherche se caractérisent par une préoccupation marquée pour les mesures et les analyses à la fois statistiques et cartographiques. En raison de la place accordée au thème migratoire, nous portons une attention particulière à ce thème car il est de loin le champ de recherche que les géographes de la population occupent le plus depuis les débuts. Enfin, nous terminons par une présentation des thèmes porteurs pour le XXIe siècle et par les changements que la géographie de la population devrait apporter pour assurer son existence et sa durabilité.

Abstract
The aim of this article is to describe the various trajectories of population geography since the 1950s. More specifically, it proposes a theoretical, methodological and thematic synthesis of this sub-discipline, focussing on the research conducted by geographers in Quebec. We begin our study of population geography within the boundaries imposed by national fields of geography as well as the reasons why it has been restricted solely to a positivistic approach. In the next section, we synthesize the research on the following components of demography; namely, fertility, mortality and migration. In our synthesis, we will see that research is characterized by a marked preoccupation with both statistical and cartographical measurement and analysis. On account of the space devoted to the theme of migration, we focus our attention specifically on this component, as it has easily been the most popular field of research among human geographers since the beginning. In conclusion, we present a list of topics that will dominate the 21st century given the changes that population geography is expected to introduce in order to guarantee its existence and durability.

Resumen
Se presentan aquí las diversas trayectorias de la geografía de población desde los años 1950. Específicamente, se propone un inventario teórico, metodológico et temático de esta subdisciplina geográfica, teniendo en cuenta las investigaciones realizadas por geógrafos quebequenses. Se trata del objeto de la Geografía de población en las geografías nacionales y las razones por las cuales esta subdisciplina se limitó sobre todo a un enfoque positivista. Otra sección presenta una síntesis de las investigaciones realizadas sobre los componentes de la demografía, es decir la fecundidad, la mortalidad y las migraciones. Ese inventario muestra que los trabajos de investigación se caracterizan por una marcada preocupación por medidas y análisis estadísticos y cartográficos. El tema migratorio ocupa un lugar importante en el presente análisis que obedece, desde principios de la disciplina, al interés privilegiado de los geógrafos por ese campo de investigación. Finalmente, se presentan temas prometedores para el siglo XXI, sobre los cambios que la Geografía de población debería abordar para asegurar su existencia y su permanencia.
