Résumé
Cet essai se propose d’envisager ce que pourraient être, dans leur diversité mais aussi leur cohérence, les traits, les problématiques et les perspectives d’une science géographique fondée sur le concept d’habiter. Distinguant trois instances d’analyse, l’espace habité, l’habitant et la cohabitation, l’idée est aussi d’envisager leur articulation dans les dynamiques d’un rapport d’habitation. Ainsi s’ouvrent les dimensions existentielles et politiques d’une telle approche. Au-delà, se pose l’éventualité d’une structuration topique fondamentale des êtres humains et des sociétés, c’est-à-dire celle d’espaces habités non géographiques, mais pourtant construits et appréhendables avec les notions communes aux espaces habités géographiques. Et cela revient encore à examiner les limites du concept autant que celles de cette science géographique.

Abstract
This essay intends to consider what could be the characteristics, problems and perspectives of a geographical science based upon a well-knit yet multi-dimensional concept of inhabiting. We will single out three targets of analysis: inhabited space, the inhabitant, and cohabitation; in addition, their interconnectedness as regards the dynamics of their habitation relationship will be considered. The existential and political dimensions of such an approach become apparent in this manner. Above and beyond these considerations, the eventuality of a fundamental structuring of individual and social topography comes into play, one that involves inhabited non-geographic spaces, which are, however, constructed and rendered understandable using ideas common to inhabited geographical spaces. And all this leads us back to examining the limits of the concept and of this geographical science itself.
