Résumé
Cet article, volontiers polémique, cherche à poser sur la métropole contemporaine un regard réconciliant les fragmentations urbaines et les liens sociaux. Il prend, pour ce faire, fait et cause pour la ville proche, en repartant du partenariat cher à Simmel entre la proximité et la distance. Les différences culturelles, au coeur du paradigme de la société contemporaine, posent en effet un certain nombre de défis que la théorie de la transaction sociale, issue de cette tradition simmelienne, semble être en mesure d’aborder: comment faire des compromis de coexistence à propos de valeurs inconciliables? Mais la ville proche désigne aussi un échelon stratégique dans la construction du vivre ensemble dans la ville cosmopolite, ce qui impose une lecture particulière. En guise d’illustration, on reprendra une discussion amorcée dans les Cahiers de géographie du Québec en 2003 sur les controverses relatives à l’aménagement des lieux de culte dans la région montréalaise.

Abstract
The goal of this purposely controversial essay is to examine the contemporary metropolis with an eye to reconciling urban fragmentation and social links. In the process, it vigorously defends the nearby city, adopting as a starting point the partnership between proximity and distance so important to Simmel. In fact, cultural differences, which are at the heart of the paradigm of our contemporary society, provide a certain number of challenges that the social transaction theory (an outgrowth of this Simmelian tradition) seems able to address: how to make compromises of coexistence when irreconcilable values are involved? But the nearby city also refers to a strategic scale in the construction of coexistence in the cosmopolitan city, which, in turn, leads to a specific interpretation, most notably as concerns the development of religious premises in the Montreal region.
