Résumé
Depuis la disparition de l’URSS, en 1991, l’Asie centrale est partagée entre cinq États. Complexes, ses frontières sont passées brutalement du statut de frontières intérieures à celui de frontières internationales. Certains auteurs n’hésitent pas à recourir à la catégorie de « frontière artificielle » pour les décrire. Pourtant, ce concept est fort réducteur et contestable, tout autant que celui de « frontière naturelle » : tous les deux renvoient à des représentations très idéologiques des frontières étudiées.
Par ailleurs, l’histoire des tracés témoigne des préoccupations qui ont présidé au découpage de l’Asie centrale à l’époque soviétique : elle révèle des critères de gestion qui ne font pas des frontières de l’Asie centrale des tracés ontologiquement différents des autres frontières du monde. Les États nouvellement indépendants d’Asie centrale ont, certes, hérité de frontières complexes, mais la question de leur gestion pacifique relève beaucoup plus des volontés politiques des gouvernements que d’une prétendue nature artificielle des tracés.

Abstract
Central Asia has been divided among five States since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. These complex borders suddenly went from the status of interior limits to that of international boundaries. Some authors have little hesitation using the term “artificial boundary”. This concept however is debatable and overly minimizing, to the same extent as the concept of “natural boundaries”: both reflect very ideological representations of the borders they are used to describe.
Moreover, the history of boundary making underlines the approaches used by Soviet officials when they carved up the region: it reveals criteria that certainly do not make Central Asian boundaries ontologically different from borders elsewhere in the world. There is little doubt that newly independent States inherited complex limits, but the issue of their peaceful management has more to do with political goals and the objectives of local government than to the reportedly artificial nature of State boundaries.
