Le milieu morphoclimatique tardiglaciaire dans la région de Montréal

Résumé

Les fentes de gel fossiles découvertes dans les basses terres du Saint-Laurent, au cours des huit dernières années, démontrent qu'un pergélisol s'est installé dans les terres exondées du Québec méridional après la déglaciation. La palynologie indique qu'une forêt boréale se développait durant cette période. Ces conditions expliquent les caractères essentiels de la morphogenèse tardiglaciaire marquée par l'importance prépondérante de la glace souterraine. Celle-ci a joué un rôle capital dans le façonnement de deux régions, situées au nord de Montréal, étudiées en détail : A Arundel, elle a commandé l'apparition de cuvettes thermokarstiques associées à un réseau polygonal de fentes de gel fossiles, des dépôts de loess et des vallons périglaciaires. À Piedmont, elle a déterminé de spectaculaires effondrements dans un fond de remblaiement marin, redressant des argiles cham-plainiennes à la verticale. Dans les deux régions, la dynamique du pergélisol a interféré avec l'encaissement du réseau hydrographique.

Abstract

The fossil ice wedges which have been found during the last eight years in the St. Lawrence Lowlands provide evidence of permafrost development in the emerged lands of Southern Québec following deglaciation. Palynology yields evidence that a boreal forest was developing during that period. Such conditions account for the essential features of late glacial geomorphogeny as characterized by the preponderant importance of underground ice. A major role was performed by underground ice in the shaping of two areas which have been studied in detail by the author, viz. Arundel and Piedmont. In the former area, the underground ice has governed the formation of thermokarstic depressions associated with a polygonal network of fossil ice wedges, with loess deposits, and with periglacial vales. In the latter, the underground ice has determined spectacular collapse features in a marine fill bottom, inducing the Champlain Sea clay to become vertically arranged. In both areas, the involved permafrost dynamics have interfered with the entrenching of the drainage network.
