Le discours schizophrène dans « Alicia » de Gabrielle Roy

Résumé

Dans la nouvelle «Alicia» tirée du recueil Rue Deschambault, Gabrielle Roy présente, par l’intermédiaire de la narratrice adulte Christine, le personnage de la petite Christine qui mime en quelque sorte sa soeur Alicia, atteinte d’une maladie mentale. Le discours artificiel de l’adulte, qui se marie à un discours enfantin tout aussi artificiel, possède néanmoins certaines caractéristiques du discours authentique des locuteurs schizophrènes: difficulté d’établir un lien avec le monde extérieur, usage d’anaphores et, à certains moments, emploi fréquent de liens lexicaux. Malgré son usage limité dans la nouvelle «Alicia», le discours schizophrène produit l’effet souhaité: protéger un personnage vulnérable, tout en le valorisant.

Abstract

In “Alicia”, a short story from Rue Deschambault [Street of Riches], Gabrielle Roy presents, through the adult narrator Christine, the character of the little Christine who mimics in a way her sister Alicia, suffering from a mental illness. The former’s artificial discourse which goes hand in hand with just as artificial childish discourse possesses nevertheless certain characteristics of the authentic discourse of schizophrenic speakers: difficulty to establish a reference to the outside world, use of anaphoras, and at certain times, quite a frequent use of lexical ties. Even though the use of the schizophrenic discourse is limited in the above-mentioned short story, it produces well the desired effect: to protect a vulnerable character while increasing its standing.
