Résumé

Le père Alexis de Barbezieux, capucin, né Georges Derouziers (1854-1941), est un des premiers propagateurs au Canada français de la doctrine sociale de l’Église, inaugurée par l’encyclique du pape Léon XIII, Rerum novarum (1891). Sensible aux réalités des travailleurs, il a donné des conférences et prêché dans de nombreuses paroisses pour vulgariser la pensée de l’Église et soutenir l’action des ouvriers. Nommé aumônier des syndicats catholiques de Québec en 1902, il a agi pendant douze ans comme médiateur et conseiller, toujours avec tact et diplomatie. Fort de l’expérience d’une vie riche et étonnante, il a contribué à ouvrir l’Église catholique à une certaine modernité au début du xx^e siècle.

Abstract

Father Alexis de Barbezieux, capuchin, born Georges Derouziers (1854-1941), was one of the first propagators in French Canada of the social doctrine of the Church, inaugurated by the encyclical of Pope Leo XIII, Rerum novarum (1891). Sensitive to the realities of the workers, he gave conferences and preached in many parishes to popularize the thought of the Church and support the action of the workers. Appointed chaplain to the Catholic unions of Quebec in 1902, he acted for 12 years as a mediator and adviser, always with tact and diplomacy. With the experience of a rich and astonishing life, he contributed to opening up the Catholic Church to a certain modernity at the beginning of the 20th century.
