Résumé
La Relève porte son nom parce qu’au cœur de la Crise économique ET spirituelle des années 1930 elle a repensé deux composantes fondamentales de la vie du Canada français, la religion et le nationalisme. En élargissant le religieux au spirituel et en désolidarisant le christianisme de ses rapports aux pouvoirs, les rédacteurs de la revue ont conjugué la pensée de Maritain (surtout) et de Mounier en faisant comprendre que la primauté du spirituel et celle de l’esprit qui donne son nom à la revue fondée en 1932 constituent un seul et même programme. Au nationalisme traditionnel dont Maritain avait fait la critique au temps de la condamnation (1926) de L’Action française de Paris, La Relève oppose d’abord une conquête de soi et personnelle et une nation culturelle où la créativité symbolique est garante d’une véritable spécificité. La revue pose un question de fond : la catholicité peut-elle façonner quelque forme de modernité ?
Abstract
La Relève is so called because in the throes of the economic AND spiritual troubles of the 1930s, the journal rethought two fundamental components of the life of French Canada, religion and nationalism. By widening religion to embrace spirituality and by distancing Christianity from the civil power, the authors of the journal combined the work of Mounier and especially of Maritain to advance that the primacy of the spiritual and that of the mind constitute the same programme. Similar reasoning had inspired the journal Esprit founded in 1932. To traditional nationalism that Maritain opposed when L’Action française of Paris was condemned in 1926, La Relève offered instead personal self-assertion and a cultural nation in which symbolic creativity would guarantee true specificity. The journal asked a fundamental question: Can Catholicity mould a form of modernity?
