Résumé
Cet article explore l’évolution de la titrisation des risques de catastrophe depuis les années 1990 aux États-Unis. À cet égard, nous discutons des conditions qui ont favorisé le développement des marchés d’assurance et de réassurance et nous présentons quelques structures qui ont émergé sur le marché américain.
Dans l’implémentation de ces structures, les assureurs se sont vite rendu compte que ces instruments étaient difficiles à évaluer à cause, entre autres, de l’ambiguïté des facteurs qui affectent les primes de risque. Nous reprenons, dans ce texte, un modèle simple de Froot et Posner (2000), qui adoptent une approche portefeuille pour introduire l’impact de l’incertitude sur les possibilités de catastrophe. Finalement, nous étudions l’impact de certains événements comme ceux du 11 septembre 2001 sur les pratiques de gestion des risques dans le secteur de l’assurance.
Abstract
This article explores the manner in which the assignment of risks associated with catastrophic events has evolved since the 1990s in the United States. In this regard, we discuss the conditions which have favoured the development of insurance and reinsurance markets and present a few structures which have emerged on the American market.
In implementing those structures, insurers quickly realized that these instruments were difficult to evaluate because of such things as the ambiguity of the factors affecting risk premiums. In this text, we borrow a simple model from Froot and Posner (2000) who adopt a portfolio approach to introduce the impact of uncertainty regarding the possibility of catastrophic events. Finally, we study the impact of certain events like those of September 11, 2001 on risk-management practices in the insurance sector.
