Résumé
Entre 2003 et 2012, des résidents du village de Jeita (Liban) se sont livrés à des expériences mystiques aux côtés d’une femme sujette à des visions de la Vierge Marie. Ils ont prié ensemble, interprété l’enseignement de la Vierge, construit un sanctuaire, fait paraître des livres et inventé un langage symbolique qui transcende les divisions en action au sein de la société libanaise — et ce, jusqu’en 2012, date à laquelle la police nationale mit fin à leurs activités sur ordre du Conseil d’État. Cette note de recherche rend compte d’un premier terrain de recherche mené auprès d’anciens membres du groupe mystique et des autorités ecclésiales qui se sont inquiétées de voir une « hérésie » prendre forme à Jeita. L’analyse proposée suggère que l’État moderne fait bien plus que gouverner le religieux : il gouverne également par le religieux.

Abstract
Between 2003 and 2012, several residents of Jeita (Lebanon) engaged in mystical experiences with a woman who conjured visions of the Virgin Mary. They prayed together, interpreted the Virgin’s teachings, built a shrine, published books, and invented a symbolic language meant to transcend the social and political divisions that plague Lebanon. In 2012, however, the country’s highest tribunal (the State Council) ordered the national police dismantle the mystic group. This research note draws on fieldwork conducted among former members of the mystical group, but also ecclesiastics horrified to see a “heresy” taking shape in Jeita. My analysis suggests that the modern state does more than govern religion: it also governs through religion.

Resumen
Entre 2003 y 2012, los habitantes del pueblo de Jeita (Líbano) se entregaron a experiencias místicas al lado de una mujer que tenia visiones de la Virgen Maria. Rezaron juntos, interpretaron las enseñanzas de la Virgen, construyeron un santuario, publicaron libros e inventaron un lenguaje simbólico que trasciende las divisiones internas de la sociedad libanesa -lo que, hasta 2012, fecha en la que la policía nacional puso fin a sus actividades por orden del Consejo de Estado. Esta nota de investigación refleja una primera investigación sobre el terreno que se realizó entre los antiguos miembros del grupo místico y de las autoridades eclesiásticas que se inquietaron al ver que en Jeita se estaba formando una «herejía». Nuestro análisis sugiere que el Estado moderno hace más que gobernar lo religioso: también gobierna a través de la religión.
