Le silence du figurant de sa propre histoire Autour du tournage du film français « Opération turquoise » au Rwanda On cinema and the making of history in Rwanda. A role for Rwandans ?

Résumé

Une abondante cinématographie est née des cendres du génocide rwandais de 1994. En juin 2007, le cinéaste français Alain Tasma et son équipe ont parcouru le Rwanda dans le but de tourner un film sur l’Opération Turquoise, une action militaire organisée par la France vers la fin du génocide rwandais. L’équipe s’est arrêtée dans la ville de Butare, province très touché par les massacres : elle y a recruté des figurants parmi les Rwandais présents au moment du drame de 1994 et a procédé à une reconstitution du drame tandis que les habitants vaquaient à leurs occupations quotidiennes. Le tout treize ans après le drame. Une réflexion peut s’engager sur la perception de ces tournages chez les Rwandais. Nous avons choisi de mettre l’accent sur les intellectuels de Butare : dans le cadre de discussions avec les élèves et les enseignants et la présence sur les lieux du tournage de l’Opération Turquoise, nous avons constaté que ce tournage suscitait des attentes au sujet du déséquilibre dans les représentations, en particulier pour des raisons politiques. Ce point de vue des élites est aussi révélateur d’un rapport trouble avec la transparence, l’expression et la relation avec la paysannerie.

Abstract

An abundant cinematography was born from ashes of the Rwandan genocide of 1994. In June 2007, the French filmaker Alain Tasma walked a team in Rwanda in order to make a film on the Turquoise Operation, a military action organized by France at the end of the Rwandan genocide. The team stopped in Butare, province very touched by the massacres : it recruited extras there among the Rwandan present at the time of the drama of 1994 ; it carried out a reconstitution of the drama whereas the inhabitants were occupied with their daily occupations. The whole, 13 years after the drama. A reflection can be raised about the perceptions of these filmakings within the Rwandans. We chose to focus on intellectuals from Butare : through discussions with students and teachers and presence at the scene of the shooting of Operation Turquoise, we found that the eyes of foreigners raise expectations about the imbalance in the performances, particularly for political reasons. This view of the elites on the shooting is also indicative of a report trouble with transparency, the expression and relationship with the peasantry.
