Résumé
Le présent article examine la transformation de l’ethnologie et de l’interprétation dans les travaux de l’anthropologue Colin Turnbull et de la peintre Anne Eisner (Putnam). Cette dernière, qui a vécu à la lisière de la forêt d’Ituri, dans l’ancien Congo belge (République démocratique du Congo ou RDC) durant les années 1940 et 1950, puis à nouveau en 1957-58, a transcrit deux cents légendes des Pygmées Mbuti ; l’utilisation (et, comme nous le verrons ici, la transformation) qu’a faite Colin Turnbull de certaines de ces transcriptions laisse entrevoir une vision du monde faite d’oppositions : Pygmées Mbuti-Villageois Bira, forêt-village, bonne mère-mauvaise mère. L’oeuvre d’Anne Eisner dévoile davantage des ponts et des intersections plutôt qu’elle ne polarise l’inclusion et l’exclusion soulignées par Turnbull. Les toiles d’Eisner laissent transparaître le regard nuancé que l’artiste pose sur la société d’Epulu, qui s’explique par son statut de mère parmi d’autres, de femme, d’Occidentale et de peintre. Il y va du dialogue entre l’étranger et le familier qui génère des interprétations différentes et par là brouille souvent la distinction nette entre les données observées et les transformations auxquelles donnent lieu l’écriture ou l’art.

Abstract
This paper traces the transformation of ethnology and interpretation in the work of artist Anne Eisner (Putnam) and anthropologist Colin Turnbull. Eisner, who made her home at the edge of the Ituri forest of DRC (ex Belgian Congo) during the 1940s and 1950 and again in 1957-58 transcribed 200 Mbuti Pygmy legends ; Turnbull used these legends (and in the case studied here transformed one of them) to map an oppositional world view: the Mbuti Pygmy/the Bira farmer, the forest/the village, the good mother/bad mother. Eisner looks to crossovers and intersections, as well as the agency of women, with a perspective different from the polarizations of inclusion and exclusion presented by Turnbull. Her complex view of this society can be understood from her painting and comes out of her own situation as one of the “mothers,” a woman, a Westerner, and a painter. What is at stake is the dialogue between the foreign and the familiar that creates differing interpretations, often blurring the line between observation and its transformation into writing or art.

Resumen
El presente artículo examina lo que distingue al método etnológico del antropólogo Colin Turnbull de la interpretación artística que representan las obras de la pintora Anne Eisner (Putman). Esta última vivió al borde de la selva de Ituri, en el antiguo Congo belga (Republica democrática del Congo o RDC) durante los años 1940 y 1950 y de nuevo entre 1957 y 1958 y transcribió doscientas leyendas de los pigmeos Mbuti. El uso (y como lo veremos en este artículo, la transformación) que hizo Colin Turnbull de algunas de esas transcripciones permite entrever una visión del mundo hecha de oposiciones: Pigmeos Mbuti – aldeanos Bira, Selva – aldea, buena madre – mala madre. La obra de Anne Eisner rebela mas bien ligas e intersecciones y no la polarización entre inclusión y exclusión que Turnbull enfatiza. Las pinturas de Eisner muestran una visión matizada de la artista sobre la sociedad Epulu, que se explica gracias a su estatus de madre entre las otras, de mujer, de occidental y de pintora. Se engendra el diálogo entre lo extranjero y lo familiar que proviene de las interpretaciones diferentes y así se vuelve opaca la distinción neta entre los datos observados y las transformaciones que permite su descripción o su representación.
