Résumé
Cet article situe le tourisme sexuel qui se développe en Thaïlande depuis les années 1960 dans le contexte plus général de la prostitution telle qu’elle est conçue et pratiquée dans le pays. Divers facteurs, conjoncturels et culturels sont examinés pour expliquer l’étendue du phénomène. Les images stéréotypées auxquelles se prêtent les prostituées et leurs clients mâles occidentaux sont dégagées en croisant les points de vue divergents des élites urbaines et de la petite paysannerie. Inscrite dans la mobilité et procédant presque toujours d’un rapport à l’étranger, du proche ou du lointain, la prostitution est placée sous le signe d’une profonde ambiguïté que l’étude rapporte aux enjeux identitaires dont elle est le lieu et à des tensions larvées entre classes sociales ou composantes ethniques de la nation.

Abstract
This paper puts sex tourism, which expanded in Thailand from the 1960s’ onwards, back into the global context of prostitution as it is locally conceived and practicized. Various historic and cultural factors are considered to explain the scale of the phenomenon. The images of the prostitutes and of their Western customers depicted by the local urban elites and the poor peasantry are compared, and their differences pointed out. Based upon mobility and the contact with foreigners from inside or outside, prostitution stands in a deep state of ambiguity which relates to the identity stakes it crystallizes and to the latent tensions between social classes and ethnic components of the nation it expresses.
