Zulu Time : le paratexte paradoxal

Résumé

Dans cet article, l’auteur étudie le rôle du paratexte dans Zulu Time, une production de Robert Lepage. On propose, comme point de départ, que si l’on accepte la définition conventionnelle du paratexte, le spectateur se trouverait sans point de repère aucun. L’auteur postule que dans Zulu Time le paratexte, le texte soi-disant « secondaire » envahit véritablement l’espace scénique au lieu de tout simplement « envelopper » le texte dialogué et que le code aéronautique, autour duquel tout le spectacle s’organise, annoncé dans le programme imprimé et exploité pendant le spectacle, fonctionne à la fois comme paratexte et texte visible, lisible mais non dialogué. L’auteur suggère que le paratexte fonctionne d’une manière paradoxale et sert à illustrer le trope central de la production, à savoir, la solitude dans la multitude. En somme, Zulu Time se veut un théâtre de l’image dans lequel le mot et la notion de texte, para ou autre, se trouvent éclatés et renouvelés.

Abstract

In this article, the author considers the role of the paratext in Robert Lepage's Zulu Time. Based on the initial premise that conventional definitions of paratext cannot be applied to theatre for which there is no text, the author suggests that the printed programme is the spectator's only reference point. Paradoxically, it is argued, this "secondary" document, normally used to simply set up the main event, actually takes over the production acting therefore, as both a paratext and a visible, readable and staged text. Furthermore, the paratext, which includes, primarily, the international aeronautic alphabet, plays a paradoxal role to the extent that it illustrates the production's central trope, namely that of solitude in a multitude. The author argues Zulu Time is imagistic theatre in which traditional concepts of text and paratext are challenged and renewed.
