An isolated incisor looth of a giant beaver (Castoroides ohioensis Foster) recovered from Indian Island, New Brunswick, near the mouth of the Bay of Fundy, represents the most eastern record of this animal in Canada. Unfortunately no stratigraphic context is available for the specimen, which was recovered loose near a beach also known to yield archaeological materials- The specimen may have been deposited on a storm beach from near shore deposits, but it is also possible that the tooth was carried to the site by people. The rarity of giant beaver fossils in southern Canada adds to the significance of this specimen.

The Cheverie Zn-Pb occurrence, within the Windsor Basin of southern Nova Scotia, is associated with intense carbonate alteration of a mafic dyke and surrounding deformed dark grey siltstone and shale of the Carboniferous Morion Bluff Formation. The mafic dyke, consisting of euhedral plagioclase (Aruj^o), augitic pyroxene, and ilmenite with late-stage mcsostasis and granophyre. is subalkaline, has within-plate affinities and is similar to h-MORB; clinopyroxcne chemistry indicates a transitional subalkalinc-alkaline chemistry. Dating (*°Ar/™Ai whole rock) of the mafic dyke indicates emplacement at 315 Ma, thus providing a minimum age for ductile deformation of the sedimentary rocks and a maximum age for the mineralization.

The occurrence of pyrite. marcasite, sphalerite (Fe-poor and Fe-rich), and galena with bitumen is similar to the metal association at the nearby Walton haritc-ba.se metal deposit and suggests a metallogenic affinity. Two phase (I-hk>~V) fluid inclusions in vein carbonate homogenize at 156° to 26S°C and have salinities of 0-22 wt. % equiv. NaCI. Stable isotopes analyses indicate: (l)fi"S values of-4 5 and t-2.2 %o for galena and -4.4 %m for sphalerite; and(2)6lJC values of-8.8 and -1.4 %• and 6"0 values of+22 5 and +21.2 %• for carbonate, with the latter equating lo +11.7 to +13.0 %o for formation temperatures of ca. 200°C.

The fluid chemistry is consistent with hasinal-type fluids originating within the Windsor Basin and interacting with liquid petroleum and other lower-temperature and lower-salinity fluids. A similar fluid history has been inferred for the Carboniferous Walton and Gays River deposits of southern Nova Scotia. The timing of mineralization is consistent with the previous estimates of ca. 300 Ma for other mineralization hosted by the Morton and Windsor groups in the Carboniferous of Nova Scotia

La composition chimique des fluides correspond aux fluides de bassin provenant dc rinterieur du bassin dc Windsor et interagissant avec du peirole liquid* et d'autres fluides a faiblc salinite et basse temperature. Les chcrchcurs ont suppose un passe analogue dans 1c cas des fluides des gites carboniferes dc Walton et dc la riviere Gays dans le Sud dc la Nouvcllc-Ecossc. Lc moment dc la mineralisation correspond aux datations estimalives antericures d'environ 300 Ma d'autrcs mineralisations incluscs dans le groupe dc Morton-Windsor ct remontant au Carbonifere en Nouvellc-Fcossc.

New detailed mapping in central coastal Maine shows the existence of a dextral strike-slip my Ion i tic shear zone, 250-500m thick, separating the sillimanite-grade Passagassawakeag terrane and the chloritc-grade Bucksport Formation of the Kredcricton Trough. Foliation within the shear zone is near-vertical, with near-horizontal stretching lincations and pervasive dextral sense-of-shcar indicators. Followed eastward, this northeast-striking terrane boundary turns north. A thin unit of alternating layers of quartz and gamet+biotite+magnetite, previously interpreted as the stratigraphic Rider Bluff unit, lies along this north-south striking (eastern) part of the Passagassawakeag-Bucksport boundary. Petrographic analysis demonstrates that the layering in this unit is a tectonic fabric, and the entire unit is interpreted as consisting of mytonites formed along a transpressional thrust, now overturned, along which the Passagassawakeag terrane was exhumed. If this is the case, the Liberty-Orrington shear zone may represent part of an orogen-scale dextral shear zone, continuous with the Penobscot Bay and Norumbega fault zones, through the Acadian orogeny.

Une analyse petrogrmphique rtvele que la stratification a I'tnterieur dc cette unite" est de fabrique tectontque; on intcrprete I'ensemble de I'unitl comme une unite constiluce de mylonites s'etani formec Ic long d'un chevauchement transprcssionnel. maintenant renverse, le long duqucl Ic terrane de Passagassawakeag a t\i exhume\ Si e'est bien le cas. la zone de cisaillement de Liberty-Orrington pourrait representcr une partic d'une zone de cisaillement dcxtre oroginiquc maintenant une continuite avec les zones fail lees de la baic de Penobscot et de Norumbega pendant I'orogenese acadienne.
