Résumé

Cet article propose une étude de la voix narrative dans Le Sari vert d’Ananda Devi qui met en scène un narrateur éthiquement problématique. Violent, menteur et manipulateur, le narrateur du Sari vert fait partie des narrateurs indignes de confiance ou non fiables, étudiés par la narratologie postclassique (W. Booth, A. Nünning). L’oeuvre, cependant, ne se fonde pas complètement sur la confession solitaire d’un bourreau puisque deux personnages féminins sont présents à portée de voix du narrateur. Présenté comme un monologue intérieur, le récit joue de l’ambiguïté entre parole et pensée du narrateur, entre présence et absence des interlocutrices au chevet du personnage-narrateur alité. Cette construction narrative, qui permet d’introduire des déplacements entre ce qui est dit et ce qui est entendu, conduit à interroger le poids du discours de domination et la manière de se confronter à la parole des bourreaux.

L’étude s’attache tout d’abord à caractériser la violence du discours et l’emprise qu’exerce le narrateur sur les personnages féminins. En s’appuyant sur les références à l’Histoire, elle montre par la suite que la violence du narrateur s’inscrit dans une historicité qui invite à penser la dimension politique de la situation discursive du récit. En dernière instance, l’analyse de l’interlocution révèle que le narrateur violent ne maîtrise pas complètement sa parole. Le récit inscrit dans les failles de la parole du bourreau la possibilité pour les victimes de retrouver une vérité subjective à condition de savoir décrypter le langage de la haine et de la domination.

Abstract

This article examines the narrative voice in Ananda Devi's Le Sari vert, which features an ethically problematic narrator. Violent, deceitful, and manipulative, the narrator of Le Sari vert is one of the untrustworthy or unreliable narrators studied by postclassical narratology (W. Booth, A. Nünning). However, the work is not solely based on the solitary confession of a tormentor, as two female characters are present within earshot of the narrator. Presented as an interior monologue, the narrative plays with the ambiguity between the narrator's spoken words and thoughts, as well as the presence or absence of the interlocutors at the bedside of the bedridden narrator-character. This narrative structure, allowing shifts between what is said and what is heard, prompts us to question the significance of discourses of domination and how to confront the words of executioners. The study first characterizes the violence within the discourse and the narrator's influence over the female characters. Drawing on historical references, it then shows that the narrator's violence is tied to a historicity that encourages us to consider the political dimension of the narrative's discursive context. Ultimately, the analysis of the dialogue reveals that the violent narrator does not fully control his words. The narrative captures, in the flaws of the executioner's speech, the possibility for victims to rediscover a subjective truth—if they can decipher the language of hatred and domination.
