Abstract
TOWARD A NEW CONCEPT OF VALUES : PSYCHOLOGY'S CONTRIBUTION TO VALUE CONCEPTS IN CRIMINOLOGY
The present article introduces a new style of presentation to our review. It was not written by a team, but is the beginning of a dialogue between authors. Part Three by Christian Debuyst is a commentary on the first two sections written by Francyne Goyer-Michaud, which bear on values in psychology and on the elaboration of a new concept of values and its application to juvenile delinquency.
Using the guiding theory developed by Spranger and Allport, in which values are defined as the motivations which predispose behaviour, a new concept of values is established — « motivational » values. There would be intermediary values between the individual and the world of values to which he adheres which induce both his values and his non-values, and which receive their power to do so from one of the well-known motivations — anxiety. It became possible, then, to attach to motivating values a typology based on anxiety. In this way, we infer that there are four types of motivating values resulting from anxiety : hedonistic anxiety where behaviour is guided by both the search for pleasure and escape from unpleasantness ; other-directed anxiety which is the fear of losing the love of one's peers ; authority-oriented anxiety, which is fear of the disapproval of authority figures ; and last, integral anxiety, where one fears a lowering of self-esteem. A study of the characteristics of young delinquents made it possible to establish the hypothesis that, in comparison with their socially integrated peers, they were more susceptible than the latter to the first two types of anxiety, and less susceptible to the other two.
Along with the formulation of this new concept, the various methods used in measuring the values were studied to select the one that seemed the most suitable for the problem in question.
Christian Debuyst bases his critical view of the study of values on four questions that came to mind after reading the text of Francyne Goyer-Michaud. The first concerns the concept of values itself. He believes a differentiation must be made between functional values and true values, and that the motivational values developed by Francyne Goyer-Michaud apply only to the first. He next reflects on anxiety as a source of values, advancing the theory that fear constitutes the motivation of a rather elementary morality which, though it never completely disappears, must eventually be replaced by a higher morality where others are seen as a value.
After thinking about the concepts of personality which underly the type of adherence to values, he recognizes two presuppositions in the theory of the personality serving as the basis for the idea of values proposed by Francyne Goyer-Michaud : psychic economy leading to a reduction of tension, a completely Freudian concept, and a very sociological definition of the socialization process. What we have learned from the study of animal psychology, however, leads him to believe that everything cannot be explained by the search to reduce tension. We must therefore reach a theory of personality in which the attitude which an individual adopts towards a valued object is not dictated by the group nor by its sanction, but derives directly from the link that is established with the object he perceives to be a value.
Finally, discussing the importance of this in its relation to criminology, he arrives at the three following conclusions : 1) the delinquent act cannot be looked upon as solely the breaking of a rule, but as the realization of a value — in this case the group, which is very demanding and requires submission. 2) Most of the time, delinquents show deficient
attachment to values and that attachment is merely functional. 3) At the treatment level, in order to have delinquents adhere to true values, we must give them access to experiences that are significant and motivating.

APORTES DE LA PSÎCOLOGÏA
A LA CRIMINOLOGÎA DE LOS VALORES
El présente articulo inaugura un nuevo estilo de presentaciôn en los marcos de esta revista. No se trata de un trabajo comun, pero si de una tentativa de diâlogo entre sus autores. Es asî que la tercera y ûltima parte que debemos a Christian Debuyst prétende ser una reflexion sobre las dos primeras secciones redactadas por Francyne Goyer-Michaud, que tratan respectivamente de los valores en Psicologia y de la elaboraciôn de una nueva concepciôn de los valores y su aplicaciôn a la delincuencia juvenil.
Tomando como punto de partida la teoria axiolôgica elaborada por Spranger y Allfort, segun la cual los valores son considerados como motiva-ciones que predisponen al comportamiento, se ha llegado a una nueva nociôn de valor : la de los valores motivantes. Existen en efecto, valores intermediarios entre el individuo y el universo valorativo al cual prétende, que son susceptibles de inducir tanto sus valores como sus no-valores y que para conseguirlos reciben su poder de una potencia motivacional reconocida : la ansiedad. LLega a ser posible reunir los valores motivantes en una tipologîa desarrollada a propô-sito de la ansiedad. Es asi como se llega a cuatro tipos de valores motiva-cionales engendrados por la ansiedad : la ansiedad hedônica donde el comportamiento es guiado tanto por la bûsqueda del placer como por la fuga del desplacer ; la ansiedad alo-céntrica que es la del miedo de perder el amor que viene de los semejantes ; la ansiedad de autoridad que es el temor de la reprobaciôn viniendo de figuras de autoridad y por ultimo, la ansiedad de integridad donde se teme una baja de estima del yo.
El estudio de las caracteristicas de los jôvenes delincuentes ha permitido asentar como hipôtesis que, comparados a sus semejantes socialmente adaptados ellos eran mâs sensibles que estos ûltimos a los dos primeros grupos de ansiedad, y menos sensibles a los otros dos.
Paralelamente a la elaboraciôn de este nuevo concepto, las diferentes medidas puestas en marcha para descubrir los valores han sido revisadas, para finalmente detenerse sobre aquella que parecia la mâs adecuada, tomando en cuenta la problemâtica en cuestion.
Christian Debuyst centra su perspectiva critica del estudio de los valores sobre cuatro interrogantes surgidas a partir de la lectura del texto de Francyne Goyer-Michaud. La primera concierne a la nociôn misma de valor. El sostiene que es necesario diferenciar los valores funcionales de los valores verdaderos y que los valores motivantes desarrollados por Francyne Goyer-Michaud no se refieren sino a los primeros. Se detieoe mâs adelante en la ansiedad como fuente de valor, adelantando que el temor constituye la motivaciôn de una moral relativamente elementaria que, si no desaparece completamente, al menos da paso a una moral superior donde « el otro » es aceptado como un valor. Reflexionando seguidamente sobre les concepciones de la personalidad que sustenten el modo de relacionarse a los valores, reconoce los dos supuestos siguientes de la teoria de la personalidad, que sirviô de base a la nociôn de valor propuesta por Francyne Goyer-Michaud : la economîa psiquica que tiende a la reducciôn de la tension, concepciôn netamente freudiana, y una definiciôn muy sociolôgica del proceso de la socializaciôn. Pero, partiendo de lo que nos ensena el estudio de la psicologia de los animales, afïrma que la bûsqueda de la reducciôn de la tension no séria sificiente para explicarlo todo. Es necesario por consiguiente llegar a una teoria de la personalidad donde la actitud que un individuo adopte respecto a un objeto valorizado, no es dictada por el grupo ni por la sanciôn que proviendria de él, sino que procède directamente del laao que se establece con el objeto que él percibiô como
valor. En fin, discutiendo de la importancia de este debate dentro de la problemática criminológica, se llega a las tres conclusiones siguientes : 1) El acto delictivo no puede ser percibido únicamente como la transgresión de una regla, sino como la realÍ2ación de un valor, en este caso el grupo, que comporta exigencias y subordinación. 2) La mayor parte del tiempo, les delincuentes presentan un apego deficiente a los valores, un apego que no es más que funcional. 3) A nivel de tratamiento, a fin que los delincuentes obtegan los valores verdaderos, es necesario hacerbos vivir experiencias que sean por si mismas significativas y motivantes.

DER WEG ZU EINER NEUEN AUFFASSUNG DER WERTE : DER BEITRAG DER PSYCHOLOGIE ZUR KRIMINOLOGIE DER WERTE
Der vorliegende Artikel eröffnet einen neuen Darbietungsstil in den Anlagen dieser Zeitschrift. Es handelt sich nicht um eine gemeinsame Arbeit, sondern um einen Anfang von Dialog zwischen ihren Verfassern. So ist der dritte und letzte Teil, den wir Christian Debuyst verdanken, eine Betrachtung der von Francine Goyer-Alichaud abgefassten zwei ersten Abschnitte die bzw. die Werte in der Psychologie, die Ausarbeitung einer neuen Auffassung der Werte und ihre Anwendung im Bereich der jugendlichen Delinquenz behandeln.
Als Ausgangspunkt die von Spranger und Allport ausgearbeitete axio-logische Theorie nehmend, worin die Werte als prädiponierende Beweggründe für das Verhalten gelten, gelangt man zu einem neuen Wertsbegriff : dem der motivierenden Werte. Tatsächlich gäbe es zwischen dem Individuum und dem von ihm beanspruchten Universalwerten Mittelwerte, die fähig sind, sowohl auf seine Werte, als auch auf seine Nicht-Werte einzuwirken und die, um dies zu erreichen, ihre Kraft aus einer anerkannten motivationnellen Macht, der Angst, schöpfen. Also wurde es möglich, die motivierenden Werte mit einer von der Angst hergeleiteten und entwickelten Typologie zu verbinden. Auf diese Weise gelangt man zu vier Typen von motivierenden, von der Angst hervorgebrachten Werten : die hedonistische Angst, wo das Verhalten des Individuums sowohl von dem Streben nach Genuss, als auch von der Flucht vor dem Leiden bestimmt wird ; die allo-zentrische Angst, die Furcht, die Liebe des Mitmenschen zu verscherzen ; die Angst vor der Autorität, das Bangen vor der Missbilligung der autoritativen Personen ; und schliesslich die Integritätsangst-der Mensch befürchtet den Verlust seiner Selbstschätzung. Das Studium der Charakteristiken jugendlicher Delinquente gestattet die Hypothese, dass diese, mit ihren gesellschaftlich angepassten Mitmenschen verglichen, empfänglicher als die letzteren auf die zwei ersten Angsttypen, und weniger empfänglich auf die anderen zwei reagieren.
Parallel mit der Ausarbeitung dieses neuen Begriffs wurden die verschiedenen, für die Aufdeckung der Werte errichteten Massregeln geprüft, um schliesslich bei derjenigen zu verweilen, die für die behandelte Problematik am entsprechendsten zu sein schienen.
Christian Debuyst richtet seine kritische Perspektive des Wertestudiums auf vier Fragen, die er aus der Lektüre des Textes von Francine Goyer-Michaud ableitet. Die erste betrifft den Wertbegriff selbst. Er besteht darauf, dass man die junktionn eilen Werte von den eigentlichen Werten unterscheiden muss und dass die von Francine Goyer-Michaud entwickelten, motivierende Werte bloss mit den ersteren in Verbindung stehen. Christian Debuyst behandelt weiter die Angst als Urquelle der Werte und betrachtet die Furcht als die Motivation einer elementaren Moral, die, wenn sie auch nie ganzlich verschwindet, doch bald einer höheren Moral den Vorrang überlässt, wo der Mitmensch als ein Wert wahrgenommen wird. Dann erwägt der Autor die Auffassungen der Persönlichkeit, die als Grundlage der Art der Verbindung mit den Werten dienen ; er erkennt dabei die zwei, der Persönlichkeitstheorie folgenden Voraussetzungen, die dem von Francine Goyer-Michaud vorgeschlagenen Wertbegriff zu Grunde lägen : die psychische Ökonomie, die nach Spannungsverminderung strebt, eine klar freudsche Auffassung, und eine höchst sozio-
logische Definition des Sozialisierungsprozesses. Jedoch, von den Lehren der Tierpsychologie ausgehend versichert Debuyst, dass man nicht alles durch die Forschung der Spannungsverminderung erklären könnte. Notwendig erscheint die Ausarbeitung einer Persönlichkeitstheorie, wo das Verhalten des Menschen dem aufgewerteten Objekt gegenüber weder von der Gruppe, noch von der Gruppe erteilten Strafmassnahme diktiert wird, sondern sich eher unmittelbar aus dem Band mit dem als Wert wahrgenommenen Objekt ergibt. Schliesslich, die Wichtigkeit dieser Debatte in der kriminologischen Problematik erörternd, gelangt Christian Debuyst zu den folgenden drei Schlüssen : 1) Der delinquente Akt kann nicht bloss als die Übertretung einer Massregel wahrgenommen werden, sondern als die Verwirklichung eines Wertes, in diesem Fall der Gruppe, die Forderung und Unterordnung mit sich bringt ; 2) Meistens zeigen die Delinquenten eine mangelhafte, bloss funktionnelle Anhänglichkeit den Werten gegenüber ; 3) Hinsichtlich der Behandlung soll man den Delinquenten, damit sie den eigentlichen Werten anzuhängen lernen, Erfahrungen beibringen, die schon für sich bedeutungsvoll und motivierend wirken.
